Running and the Heat!

I am doing the Race for Life on Saturday and when I last checked the weather it says it’s going to be 26 degrees and full on sun! I have walked the course before and there is no shade!

It doesn’t start until 11.00am and I have been telling everyone the last few months that this year I am going to run it all! I am now doubting this very much as I did my usual run this morning at 9.30 and tried to run along all the shady bits and I was beyond hot 😅

Does anyone have any ideas on how to run and not get heatstroke! Or shall I just swallow my pride and walk some (probably quite a lot) of it 😬

Yikes!!! I’d say run as much as you can but don’t push yourself too hard? It’s soooo hard in this heat and don’t want you keeling over! 😱

I was thinking this morning that I’m going to have to walk some of it as i felt a bit dizzy this morning 😵

Get a visor! Maybe take a sports drink? Or sports drink tablets to plop in a bottle given at drinks stations along the way? Plenty of factor 50 too 👌🏽

I’m doing one Sunday so hope it’ll be cooler too! Also not starting til later. AND it’s pacers week at the ParkRun this week so I want to push myself then too!

Cap..... water with you... and walk it :) Steady and slow and maybe a light jog over the finish line :)

Race for Life is a fun race as well as being a great one... carry a pink sun parasol...?

On Amazon?

Kofun Umbrella Lady Women Flouncing Princess Dome Parasol Anti-UV Sun/Rain Foldable Umbrella Pink

That would be fun and would keep you cool...

I’d suggest doing whatever you have to do to get round! The finishing is more important than anything else. If you have to walk some (or even most) of it then so be it. Good luck! 👍🤞

Thank you 😊 I think I might be walking at least some! Hey ho better than fainting 😬

Hi Bridget007, Already looking forward to the photo! I am wondering how many times you have taken part in this Run for Life? You super star you! Bike rides, 6k runs, helpful legs, soon to be add completed Race for Life with pink parasol. Achievements unending! 😊🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️☂️Sorry couldn't see a pink one!👛👚 although a white top would reflect the sun more🌸🎀. happy running/walking to you.

I’ve only done this run once before I’m doing it in memory of my mum ... 20 years in July ... she would be laughing seeing me in pink (as ordinarily I only wear black) with a pink tutu and now a pink umbrella 😂😂

over61andstilltrying profile image
over61andstilltryingGraduate in reply to Bridget007

Aw! I am very sorry. I imagine your dear Mum was far too young. I am glad she would be laughing to see you in a pink tutu with an umbrella.

I don't wear a great deal of black, but the step from my clothes to pink tutu and umbrella is a step further than I can imagine at the moment! But this running business does seem to make a number of us do things which are massively outside our comfort zones, so who knows! All the very best for the Race for Life.

She was ... and she was always laughing 😊😊 at least everyone else there will be in pink so I shouldn’t stand out 😃😃😃

Cap, sunnies, water, sunscreen, breathable fabric, and as little clothing as you're comfortable not wearing 😀 Start out super slow and see how you get on on the day. There's no shame in walking 🙂 Hope it's a great day out for you.

Bridget007 profile image
Bridget007Graduate in reply to DeeRunning

Thank you ... I will be wearing pink which is bad enough but not brave enough for shorts 🤣🤣🤣

DeeRunning profile image
DeeRunningGraduate in reply to Bridget007

Pastel pink would work! Nice n light.

When I'm running in the heat, I find I often don't realise how fatigued/dizzy or overheated I am until I stop running and start walking. It's like the momentum (such as it is at slow jog lol) carries me along. I know everyone's different, but if you do run, perhaps you could try running for 10 mins or so then a 1 min walk break just to see how you're feeling. Then run again if you're up to it?

Bridget007 profile image
Bridget007Graduate in reply to DeeRunning

Yes that’s what happened yesterday I thought I was ok then after about 28 minutes couldn’t run anymore and stopped and was quite dizzy and thought I hope I make it back to the car 😬😬 thank you I will try to run and then walk.

DeeRunning profile image
DeeRunningGraduate in reply to Bridget007

Yes it's scary how heat exhaustion can creep up and the dizzies hit out of nowhere. Run safe and have a lovely day on Saturday 👍

Thank you 😊 after this mornings run I think walking is definitely going to be on the cards ... it was just felt so hot and when I looked at my car thermometer it said only 24! 😅😅

Keep yourself well hydrated the days before, dunk your head and wrists in water just before you run, wear a hat and sunglasses, run slowly, walk if you need to (loads of people will)

Then, cross the finish line, pick up your bling and ask everyone to feed you grapes and long cold drinks the rest of the day 😋😎🍹🍺

Bridget007 profile image
Bridget007Graduate in reply to Irishprincess

I like the sound of that .. especially everyone feeding me grapes and cold drinks 🍸 🍹🥂🍹🍸🥂🍹🍾🍾😃😃

Somebody earlier on here said they had cut an old t-shirt and made a type of scarf that they soaked in water to keep them cool. They said it worked a treat!

in reply to Saartjie

Sounds good right now!

Bridget007 profile image
Bridget007Graduate in reply to Saartjie

Thank you .... That sounds like a good idea I could keep soaking it on the way round 😃

BethMay profile image
BethMay

If you put ‘cooling towel’ in search box on Amazon ( other online retailers are also available- for now anyway 😉) you’ll see some towels that you can soak in water and they keep cool for a while x

Well done for doing Race4Life at the weekend Bridget. Your mum would be very proud of what you’ve achieved on c25k, and doing the race4life.

Have a great day and adjust your running to suit the conditions. Sunglasses, hat, suntan lotion and water and I love the idea of that parasol. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️😎🏅☀️🧢☂️

Bridget007Graduate in reply to Dexy5

Thank you, she would 😊 Yesterday I was feeling a bit disappointed as I knew I wasn’t going to be able to run it all but I’m looking forward to it again now 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️😀😀

Be safe! You have many runs behind you and ahead of you, so no need to prove anything today. This weekend, it Is supposed to be 95 to 98°F here in the Northeast states of the US. I am trying to get my runs and tomorrow and possibly Friday morning, and avoid the weekend completely. Good luck!

Wow that’s really hot! 😅😅 thank you for your advice and you stay safe too 😎😎

Hi Bridget, I thought I had replied to you yesterday but my reply must have been burnt up by the sunshine. Enjoy your run with your pink parasol and your lovely Mum will be proud and laughing down from her pink cloud. Keep cool!
