The Ironic Tee shirt. Aaaahahahahahahaha!

I’d been waiting to do my first park run after graduating in April but thought I would get lots of runs in first and had also decided to wait until after my significant birthday this week, reasoning that it was daft to have my run comparisons in two different age groups.

Alarm set to Ed Sheeran’s Supermarket Flowers (not apologizing for the choice) just love the song for mums and grans everywhere! and woke up to the the coldest day of the year (so far) phoooar! Its cold and so dark. The small blacks decided that they weren’t getting out of bed, sounding like a certain model who said 30 years ago she wouldn’t get out of bed for $10,000. Whats that worth now based on super model’s earnings today I wonder? What troopers Sallenson’s EJB’s are and very moreish too, oops! strike that out, cover your ears chaps. Actually do EJB’s have ears? The dogs still reposed in their jumpers and didn’t even get out of their beds to have their “biologically appropriate” biscuits, so off in the car to Porirua Parkrun, ooh the magic of a rear heated window and seat warmer. One of the volunteers there took me aside and said come and look at this (keep it clean) phew! just his thermometer minus -2.5. What madness is this?

White grass, the elite runners in their tee shirts and shorts doing their stretches, then we’re off, got in behind a mother and son doing jogging/walking, it was comfortable they walked about my running speed, two kilometres in mum was slowing, so I overtook. I could hear them chatting behind me for a while and then nothing, I don’t know how much further I went on before I twigged that I’d missed the halfway point. I was so busy watching my feet going up another little incline, don’t fall over, I missed the sign DOH!.

No one anywhere in sight, so a long run back, then a voice its me mate Eric Carmen and his epic song ALL BY MYSELF! I could still sing to it amazing (cos I’m a runner) cue lots of dramatic arm movements to the chorus, caught Mother and son up 1 kilometre from the finish and first park run done, about 6km I think. Hubby says you are an inspiration, oldest person on the day, (52.42 official time) other runners will say Gawd! I can beat her and join up. (Was that an insult?) Later in the morning, I collected a letter in our letter box to say I am now eligible for the state pension. Timing or what? Turned 65 on Tuesday. I will return next week Porirua, think I might smash my PB haha, Sorry for the long post. Almost forgot, my tee shirt said “TRY AND STOP ME” there wasn’t anyone around to stop me and I wouldn’t have listened anyway, even if there had been. Old Floss I’m just going to add my new mantra to yours OK? I still love slow and steady it kept me going today. Hope you’re doing better x

Brilliant!! Bonkers but brilliant!! Well done you, hon.

Is it true that all the NZ parkrun pacers are Hobbits though?

On a side note, someone should anthologise these posts. Too good to be lost on the internet :-)

He hee! Probably explained why I could keep up with them. At 5ft 2in I am a giant, I may have very short legs, but comforted by the fact that they at least reach the ground. Very helpful when running. I think our posts must be so helpful to those who follow in our footsteps (in my case hairy ones) we serve as a warning, don’t take yourself too seriously and enjoy your running in your case Stephen you are the Master.🧘‍♂️

Thanks Bridget, will definitely run 5k only next week, will take my phone, so I don’t miss that halfway post again. First time for me without music, Laura or any podcast. I liked it. Lovely park, very sheltered from the wind and rain. I can’t bake but make mean cheesecakes, Mojito and lime on list for post birthday treat. Thanks for your birthday wishes, will save you a big slice. 👌

Happy 65th my friend!! What a wonderful way to celebrate it... errrr, in minus 2 temps. You are a champion to get out in that. I wouldn't get out of bed for less than 25 degrees :D Note to self: put Disco Inferno on playlist.

Love your t-shirt. Try and stop Lexi? No chance, you're on fire, woman. You are so inspiring. Enjoy the next one, just stick to the route ok? Don't want you getting lost in sub zero temps in the snow! xx

Hiya Dee. I’m such a dork on missing the turnaround, was concentrating so much on my feet, running up inclines and trying not to trip up, don’t know how I missed it. I kinda thought there’d be a cheering party halfway, so was waiting to see a marshall. I beat two walkers back though - just, very proud of myself as I ran all the way and wheeeeee! it was downhill all the way home. I’ll go back next week armed with compass and a tracker (preferably carrying hot ☕️ and 🍰 and have an amazing time improvement, might get a personal best yee ha! Disco Inferno excellent choice! How’s you and HK? Missed ya.
