Hello fellow runners/joggers 😁 I’m a treadmiller and I’ve got my last run of week 4 to do today, and while I was doing run 2 on Wednesday at the end I thought “i think I want to run outside”😳
Now my questions are........anyone else switched from treadmill to outside??
Which week did you do it on??
Was the transition ok/easy/harder??
I’ve got my treadmill on an incline (as I’ve read on here a few of you did that to get you ready for outside running)
Also there’s other folk outside 😳 I go bright red & sweaty but my breathing is in control 👌😁 I’m worried I’ll go to fast 💨 and not be able to continue the full 5 mins 😩 as I know on the treadmill where to set the dial 😎

First of all, well done for getting through week 4, you're doing really well. I know what you mean about the other folk outside! I do run outdoors rather than a treadmill so can't really offer any wise advice, but after the first few runs I became less self conscious and just ignored them! If I'm in a good mood, I'll even say "good morning" to them, which of course I can do, because we're supposed to run at a pace which allows us to carry on a conversation, right?
I had my first and only treadmill experience today actually, I don't know how you do it! I was having gait analysis done, and flippin' heck, I just couldn't get the hang. It's mad! Back to the outdoors for me.
You might actually find outdoor running better due to fresh air, and other stuff around to take your mind off the searing pain in your legs lol Give it a go... let us know how you get on!
Ha ha 😆😆 I fell in love with the treadmill at the running shop when I went for my gait analysis for new trainers, when I got back on mine I was like oh this is pants really 😩 maybe a saving pot for a new one 😜
I used to run/jog outside a few years ago didn’t give a monkeys about anyone, but no I’m older 😬 I know I’m being silly as when I see runners/joggers I’m thinking I want to be just like them 😍 so maybe bite the bullet and just go for it 😳😬😁
Loads of posts on this.... it is just different...I am sure you will get plenty of replies... Outside for me is harder... I only use my trainer if it is icy or after a spell on the IC...
I run twice as fast on the trainer than I do outside... 6K in 20 minutes and 58 seconds today ( not ice...a thunderstorm and torrential rain and lightning) I could never, ever run that quickly, in a million years outside...
Inside.. you have control.. outside.. there is the weather, the surface, obstacles and such like... and each run is different, every single time It is amazing and absolutely wonderful....
Get out there, start slow and stay slow, find a route you will enjoy and go gently....
Wow that’s amazing 20mins 58secs 😳💨😁 my hubby can do a full hour on his cross trainer going balls out at some points 😳 I can’t do 10 mins on it 😩he also said he couldn’t do it outside 😐
I’m slow as a 🐌 on the treadmill 😁 thank you might give it a go 😁
I've never run on a treadmill so can't say how it's different but I completely relate to the fear of having people staring at you! To make it less for me, I do early morning runs when there's less people out and about. Just a few dog walkers around where I am. I don't know if that helps at all! Good luck!
Thank you, I’m not a morning person (I wish I was 😩) and I do better in the evenings, may give it a go tonight as it’s cooler here today, and I mapped a route in my head that isn’t to hilly 😜
Two themes that come up regularly; treadmills and self-consciousness….I think if you can (and many can't) then out doors is just better. You get the benefits of exercise plus fresh air. In fact the three most relaxing activities in a recent survey were reading, being in nature and exercise. I run in the country whilst listening to an audiobook. Perfect.
It is supposed to be harder but the sooner you start, the sooner you will become accustomed.
As for the self-consciousness, loads of people feel that way to begin with. However, there are very few reports of nasty behaviour on here. The runners will probably be thinking, 'good for you' and the nonrunners will be wishing that they could do that.
Again the sooner you go, the sooner your self confidence will grow
You need to use an app like MapMyFitness. I set mine to give me pace voice feedback every 1km 👍🏽 Outside is definitely harder but well worth it due to variety 👌🏽
