Treadmill compared to outside?

Hi I’m Maggie, I’ve just done week 5 run 2. But I am doing mine on a treadmill because I’m a bit shy of getting out there with been a bit over weight. Has anybody else been doing it on the treadmill and now outside and if there is much difference once I start outside?, Maggie

Let me start by saying, good for you, week 5 run 2! That's great!

I started on the treadmill. There was so much changing up and down with the run / walk thing. I also liked that I could set the pace on the treadmill and then I had to keep up with it. There was no whimping out.

At about week 5 I headed outside. It's nice to get the air, see people, say good morning, look at people's gardens, meet the dogs and their owners. It bought a fresh approach to my runs. I didn't have to keep up with the treadmill, so I could slow down if my legs and lungs were telling me to.

When you are outside its nice when people say good morning or keep going luv! Nobody is really looking at you, they are too busy leading their own lives. You are past them in a moment. There are more supportive people out there than you know. If you run the same route at the same time you will find that dog walkers often look forward to greeting you - it's nice.

If you are heading outside try to find a flat route. Some people run early, in quiet parks or others run in graveyards. Maybe just try it.

Someone else wrote a post earlier today on a similar subject. Try to do a search for :-

There are some posts in there that you might find helpful.

Best wishes and good luck with your running - indoors or out -it does not matter.

There are a few differences. It is slightly easier to run on a treadmill (once you’ve mastered it) because it rolls away under you and there is no change in slope, no wind, no other weather things to challenge you.

But it isn’t really hard to run outside if you pick where and when you run.

Try it. You might love it.

Well done.

There is information in the guide to the plan healthunlocked.com/couchto5... which may be helpful to you.

Outdoors is big and beautiful and you will be just another runner, who nobody will pay much attention to.

Try it and see.

I used to always run on a treadmill...too scared to go out where people could see me! On a beautiful spring day on my drive home from work I thought 'I feel like running outside' and so I did. Haven't looked back. I find it easier now to run outside than the treadmill as there are more distractions and the fresh air makes you feel good. And nobody looks and now I don't even care about what people might think. I am running!

I moved onto the treadmill because of the snow and wet weather. I found it a bit softer on the knees than the road in those early days, and it kept me at a steady pace. But when the weather was nice I went outside again. When you are ready you will love it. I found my natural pace was a bit faster than I was running on the treadmill too. I love seeing the change in environment on different days and it’s nice to give the thumbs up to other runners.

Hi Maggie I’m Maggie too! Well actually Margaret is my correct name but only my grandmother and mother called me that when I was in trouble 🤣🤣🤣 . But now after years and years of Maggie I never really answer to Margaret! 🤗🤗🤣🏃‍♀️
