I did my 2nd run wk 3 yesterday..I have found I need something to take my mind off my body..thinking about recipes or counting something..but not my steps or breaths..something external that I can see helps me ..anything that helps me not think about my tight burning calf muscles..and a really really slow pace! 🐢🐢🐢🐢

I couldn't do this without music. My feet would wander off by themselves otherwise. If that's not a option for you, then just pick some object a couple of hundred yards in front of you. A house, roadsign, car, Royal Wedding, piece of cake, and focus on getting there. Then pick the next one.

You're just breaking your goal ("Finish this run") into smaller goals ("Get to that next chocolate eclair gatepost"). That's smart running and builds your mental toughness.

And keep your head up and smile. It sounds really daft, but smiling works wonders even if there's no-one about to watch the crazed grinning loon muttering about "Get to the cake".... :-)

I elaborated at lengths about what music does to my running, how not to be affected by the beat and avoid the potential repetitive boredom of playlists.

Once l upped the stakes and went training for HM, music at times became an obstacle. Brain wanted other things to focus on, such as survival. Now that I'm back to more comfortable environments of 8-10K, before l begin the preps for the big one, music is a must again.

A lot to do with how you're comfortable with what's going on. If you are into double digit mileage the last thing you'd need is somebody shouting at you through the cans. At least that's what l discovered. God knows, I might turn to opera whilst doing a marathon, all options are on the deck.

There's always the Ring Cycle. 14hrs of Romantic German Opera at its best. Take that, ears!!

We did w3 r3 today. I'm glad to have got through this week's runs. Have had a peek at week 4 - the running time seems to really ramp up. Am going to try the w1 r1 on Friday but I think I might need to repeat week 3
