Beginning to be back...

Hello dear running family, after 4 months off, ( viral infections then pneumonia), & checking with dr, I am allowed to make a very gentle start on dry, warm days...

So last weekend I trialled W a half!! (every other run on W1) and then the weather misbehaved. Yesterday I managed W1. I’m not expecting to race through the weeks, but with the drs encouragement and warnings ringing in my ears, I’m SO happy to be getting going gently - a little running is wonderful compared with none! 😄

Good news Elfe, I'm pleased to hear you are feeling better at last.

I had to read the bit twice that said ' I have started with a Half!'😄 I immediately thought you meant HM!

Lovely for you to be back out running, and look forward to hearing your progress. Have fun!😊x

Lol! I don’t think a HM will ever be on my radar! ... and thank you! 😃

Welcome back! I know what it’s like to be unable to run / exercise due to illness - frustrating! Take it steady, and enjoy your route back to full health and fitness :) x

Thank you! 😀

Do you know about vitamin C and pneumonia? If not , look up "doctoryourself" and pneumonia - great evidence-based info there on how effective it can be against pneumonia. Hopefully you won't need it again but it would be the 1st thing I'd turn to if it happened to me :) xx

I don’t, but will have a look thanks. I have never been prone to chest infections, so hope this was a one off, but no harm in eating lots of oranges! 😃

You 'd need a LOT of oranges to get enough to cure pneumonia! Intravenous in massive doses is what works :) :) But eat lovely oranges too - they're yummy ;) x

Oh I am so pleased for you, dear Elfe! This is lovely news. And as the weather is set to be warm and lovely all week, looks like you will be in for a treat. A nice slow reintroduction is a good idea. A little running is definitely better than none! Happy running dear friend. xxx

So glad to hear you got through that awful pneumonia and you can go back to running gradually! Let's hope the sunny days will help you get back your stamina. Take it easy and enjoy the runs!

I too had pneumonia over Xmas. Could not believe how unfit I felt. It spurred me on to start couch to 5K but it’s only really now I think my lungs have recovered. I had a relatively mild dose- no hospitalisation etc. (and that was bad enough) so I take my hat off to you. Go slow, take it easy and good luck x

Yes I really sympathise, I too avoided hospital but it wasn’t an experience to repeat. Thank you, enjoy your running too. 😃

Well done that is great and hopefully the good weather days will be more soon. Just go at your pace.

Thank you.... good weather and listening to my body is the way to go. 😀

Hello - I'm fairly new on here (I'm in W4) so didn't know about your illness but I am pleased to hear you are feeling better! (I'm intrigued by the bread board comments!?!) I too am coming back after I wouldn't say it was an illness but was diagnosed as exercise induced migraines. I am taking it very very slowly which is hard for me coz I tend to be "full dark no stars". Like you say - a little running is better than none. Well done for getting back to it & the better weather is coming now (fingers crossed) so hopefully you will be fine. Good luck x

Thank you very much.

‘Exercise induced migraine’ is a new one on me - how very frustrating for you. There is something really bleuugh about discovering the wonders of running and then health issues getting in the way. Can you manage it by building up gently?

... and the bread board - well back in December when I was newly graduated, first I sprained a calf muscle and as soon as that was healed I promptly dropped a really heavy breadboard on my toe. 🙄 So far, I seem to have had more glitches than running. I am hoping that will now reverse itself! 😃

Ah I did wonder too!! That was in my quiet time on here in the run up to the wedding!! Back now and starting from scratch with the old man...I forgot just how tiring the short intervals were!! 🤣🤣 am loving being back though this mornings run along the cycle path was beautiful. Any later and we would have regretted it though as was already 16 at 8.30! Hope injuries and illness can be left behind

In that case we can do it again from scratch together! I did W1R2 this morning- I’m so relieved that Friday wasn’t a fluke - but yes tiring! Even this limited running aggravates my residual chest pain a bit, so I may have to repeat weeks but will see how I go. I even was surprised by an auto- gremlin saying “I’ll never run more than a minute” - how crazy is that when I was running for 35 minutes at the beginning of January. Needless to say I flattened him instantly! 😄

in reply toElfe5

Oh dear - bless you. It does sound like you've been in the Wars. No I didn't know anything about it either ( I think it's down to the good old menopause) but my GP told me to stop exercising whilst they investigated- took a year to get MRI scan & Neurologist appointment & then I was given the all clear. By which time I was getting daily migraines unless I dosed myself up with so many painkillers I felt spaced out & sick! They've put me on beta blockers which has massively helped but I am still getting headaches (not migraines) after the running. I'm hoping that once my body gets used to it again they will stop. End of essay - sorry- went on a bit there!

Goodness, that’s been unfortunate - grrr to the menopause 😡 - I am in that zone too - many tropical moments. Good luck with the running. 😀

Yes we are all of an age!! Yes elfe 5 we can do this together, we did that run this morning 😊 I am on migraine meds not beta blockers, but no way I can run when the head is bad! It’s a pain isn’t it all these mid life annoyances!!

in reply toPolly2810

Indeed! Sorry- I probably wasn't that clear - I don't run while I have a migraine- OMG the very thought of it! I can't even stand up when I have one - just have to lie in a dark room - preferably near a toilet because I am usually sick too! Oh the joys - sorry prob TMI. It's afterwards I get them - usually 1-2 hours after I get home. As I say though the beta blockers have really helped but I still get a headache afterwards. I'm determined to power through though & complete this C25K & then carry on. I'm hoping that they will start to ease off as I get more used to it.

That’s really interesting...I get sick too when it’s a bad one...Tuesdays I am amazed I managed the drive home from work it was touch and go..also straight to bed but then after intense pain once the meds have kicked in it goes away..but always really tired and drained he next day. What do the beta blockers do that normal meds don’t? I’m forever trying to find a way out of the dreaded head cycle!!

well done for getting back in the running shoes so soon after pneumonia, 4 months is not very long but a testament to your graduate status just think you would not be so fit to start again so quickly
