Hi just turned 50 and led an active lifestyle until about 18 months ago when football stopped and the gym became a chore. I stiffened up and was shuffling around like an old man after a few months and the weight pilled on. Have done a week of running and two weeks of diet thus far and am more mobile etc. I was wondering if anybody else has had the same experience when stopping exercise. I really thought I was developing arthritis especially in my feet.

I believe the secret is to never stop being active. I played local league football (not particularly well, but energetically) well into my fifties and still play when I can, twenty years later. When the football diminished I took up racewalking and I think never stopping exercise has meant that though I was never an 'athlete' I am still able to move at a reasonable level.
You had that break and saw the effect of stopping exercise - I would advise, don't take a break again. Couch to 5k is the best way to get going again. Keep it going and you will watch your contemporaries shuffle into old age while you still pound out the miles. Or whatever distance or exercise makes you happy.
I agree - gotta use it or lose it! I’m 50 next year and know too many older people who are unable to do the simplest of things - we don’t want to be like them so you’ve got to keep moving! Love running and never thought I’d say that!
