I am new to exercise 51 and very very over weight a former smoker who now vapes. I am in week four and up to today I have finished every run. we are on the second day this week I made the others this week all be it almost in tears but today I just couldn't do the second 5 minutes. Any advise on breathing exercises for the rest days so I can breath and make the next runs all the way. Thank you for any advice

Welcome and well done on getting this far - you are doing really well, even if it doesn't feel like it. 😀

If you are "almost in tears" then perhaps you are going too fast? - it is really common for new runners to do that. Go as slowly as you need to - running at walking pace is absolutely fine, (more speed will come later). You say "we ", I wonder if you are trying to keep pace with somebody else who is going too fast for you?

I really struggled to get my breath in the first few weeks. The best advice I was given was to go at a comfortable pace and not think about the breathing at all - just breathe like you always do and trust that it would sort itself out. It did! 😃

I could NEVER get around my nice flat 5k route in less than 37 minutes. Tried to for months after graduation.

Then a pal persuaded me to enter a charity race.

I was extremely nervous about it and very determined "ran my own race" so I would not injure or exhaust myself "in front of everyone"

And the Bollix didn't tell me there were hills!

So - remembered a the forum advice about not starting off too fast, not getting caught up in the enthusiasm of the crowds, first race just finish it - don't try and win ( fat chance of that I knew so that was no problem LOL 😂) and so on.

I was stunned when my time came up at 33:42 😂

Honestly, I don't care if it's dog, human, pram or Comfort-Alligator anyone runs with - it is IMPOSSIBLE to both synch speeds equally, you will be subconsciously slowing down, speeding up, slowing down and nauseum and that is going to wreck your run when you are early in the game.

Try again on your own - I bet you will be just fine. ☺

Wishing you many happy miles in your future :)

Firstly.. slow down....Have you also had a quick check with your GP to make sure you are goof to go. :)

Carrying extra weight and related issues can impact your running, so it is best to make sure all is well :)

Check this post out too for lots of useful information:)

Keep it very, very slow and steady... listen to your body and make sure you take your rest days too. More if you need them.
