Week 6 complete! The first two runs of the week I didn’t find particularly difficult but today was a different matter.

The first 10 minutes were torture. I was already in a bad mood (so needed a run to sort myself out!) and was mentally complaining about every little thing I could find. I was cold and didn’t have my long sleeve top on so the plastic of my jacket felt gross on my arms. My knee just twinged. The sun is in my eyes. I feel a bit queasy. I have so much to do today

Then I realised Michael Johnson wasn’t encouraging me (how dare he!) so checked my app and I’d run 8.5 minutes on pause (according to my fitbit). How annoying! So I unpaused, manned up and got on with it and managed to finish my run. Around the magic 10 minute mark I found my stride and got over myself but admittedly I had lead legs at the end and still feel a bit queasy. Maybe I’m brewing something.

Either way I didn’t let my negative mentality get the better of me so Week 7 should commence on Saturday :)

Thank you everyone for encouraging me since I joined the forum. I can’t believe how many months it took me to get to the end of week 4 and now since 17th December (with Christmas break in between) I’m about to start week 7!

Hi Runningkp, it seems to be the consensus on this forum that the first 10 minutes is often rubbish - it's nicknamed the toxic ten. Things usually get better after that, but some runs are just hard. I console myself that the next one will be better. Very well done and keep going X

We all have runs like that at some stage. Thing is you kept at it and completed it. So week 7 should be laughter and sunshine by comparison :)

You will find as has been said that no matter how many times you have run before, and how good a runner you are - the first ten minutes is always a slog as your body aclimatises to the run.

Get used to this feeling and use it to your advantage.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Yes I’ve seen posts about the toxic 10... it really is incredible how something just clicks and everything feels a whole lot better!
