So that's Week 6 in the pocket. Managed just over 2.5 miles last night and shaved 50 seconds off of W6R2 minutes per mile so pretty pleased with myself today.
I've had some breathing issues (in that I felt I couldn't fill my lungs properly and was gasping at times), I googled it and guess what? It was 90% psychological... I pretty much controlled it last night and certainly felt the benefit of "belly breathing".
Oh, and at the end of the run I heard those immortal words.... "you're a runner now". I'm not one for public displays of affection but I nearly kissed my phone!
Looking forward to the next three weeks solid running with no walking. 18 runs down, 9 to go......
Google may tell you that gasping is psychological.
I would say you are running at an unsustainable pace. If gasping then you can't possibly get enough oxygen to supply the demands of your muscles. You will tire quickly and be more prone to injury.
Slow down. If you are new to running then you are likely on the verge of doing yourself damage by pushing too hard.
At the same time, the same Google will tell you that you're going above your limit. Gasping is a gasp away from potential injuries. I can guarantee you, from personal experience, that could be the case.
Slow brings resilience, which will bring strength and power. Those two will unable you to go faster, if you wish. At the moment you should be patient and work on your stamina (by going as slowly as you can).
One serious injury and you're back to the drawing board.
I would agree with IannodaTruffe ... forget Google and just slow down... this is a steady structured programme and if you are gasping... I do not think it is psychological... at all...!
Distance and or speed have nothing to do with getting you from the couch to thirty minute runs! Your stamina and strength have to build up slowly alongside your legs, particularly as the runs get longer... which is why rest day exercise becomes even more important.
Well done you. I've just started wk8 and I would reiterate what others have said about slowing down your pace.
I too am counting down the runs to graduation and finding if I slow my pace when I start, I have a little reserve at the end and my stamina is slowly building.
