Beginning Week Two- Aches and Pains :-/

Thankyou all for your advice and support in my introduction post!

I completed Week One last Thursday and wanted to take a couple of days rest as every part of my legs ached like mad after that session (I did do a lot more walking after I completed it) and they continued to do so even up to today - I expected as much, as I'm not used to this much exercise, but was hoping they'd feel better by today rather than still twinging a bit.

Nevertheless, I put my new shoes on and started Week Two. The extra 30 seconds added to each run didn't seem so bad, but my legs just hated today. My calves burned continuously, my knees twinged and, by the time I greeted the swans on the canal that tend to mark the end of my session depending on where they are, I was all but crying :-(

I've stopped in a nearby favourite pub for a cheeky pint and a rest before I return home - just can't face walking anymore right now...

Just wondered how long others have found it takes before their calves stop aching and burning while running?

B.

Ive started wearing compression sleeves on my calves .

I find them really good

Leave them on for a couple of hours then a warm shower

Foam rolling ...google it , might help

Thanks Bob- I'll look into that! Anything to help!

Hi Darkdreamer6

I do a lot of walking and dancing but despite that still found my legs ached a bit after the Week 1 sessions, although Week 2 has been better in that regard. I think it must be the body getting used to a very different activity. Hope it will get easier for you after a rest.

The suggestions from Runwithbob look good.

Yes Helen, I think it's because I've only done bits of walking for a long time that my body just doesn't know how to cope with running right now. Hopefully the more I do, the easier it will get!

As the programme is designed to extend anyone’s capabilities then everyone will feel a “strain” after a run.

I did W4R1 on Saturday and after this the “strains” were different to the ones that I felt after the runs on W3, W2 and W1.

Stretch before and after the runs. Remember that the 5min walk is a brisk walk and slow down if you need to.

Also be aware of what I refer to as exercise “strain” versus injury. Two very different things.

And make sure you take your rest days.

Three weeks ago, if someone would have asked me how I would feel about the programme then it probably wouldn’t have been positive, but now I can’t wait for the next run (even tho it will be early tomorrow morning and in the cold and dark). If I can do this then so can you.
