Gulp! I joined a gym now to exercise

Hi All,

I'm 50 in 4 weeks time and way over weight, so I've joined the gym at work and was wondering if can I do this program on a treadmill/running machine?

Also, is there a healthy eating diet plan that goes hand in hand with this?

Any tips, tricks or apps to download I'm all ears.

Thanks

John

Hello! and welcome. Yes you can run on a treadmill or in your living room or in the garden or down the road or in a field...It's all running. Personally, I have never run on the treadmill. For me being out and about in the countryside adds to the enjoyment of running. I would worry about the boredom factor in a gym.... But whatever fits your lifestyle is fine.

You wont lose much weight just exercising until you start going for longer runs but it will help if you are healthy eating as well. Also in a very few weeks you will notice positive changes in your physique :)

There is an NHS plan for weight loss I believe

Good luck- keep checking in here for motivational boosts. This programme can change your life!

I've done the program on a treadmill, I downloaded the podcasts from here:

nhs.uk/LiveWell/c25k/Pages/...

Just follow these, they have music in already so you don't even have mess around with that.

Not sure on the diet plan but I've just watched what I've eaten.

Thanks Lee

Lots of great replies already. Welcome to this great programme :) Take it easy, take your rest days and listen to your body..it may protest a little :)

Healthy eating regime.. so much out there.. not a diet but a well balanced nourishing healthy plan :)

Micheal Mosley ( Trust me I am a Doctor) has some great recipes in his and his wife's recipe book!

We use the recipes, as part of our eating regime... and not the fasting bit :)

Treadmill..lots of folk do use it for the porgramme...if you need to or maybe have no choice..but outdoors is amazing!!

Yes - you can - and if you have a tablet of some kind , I posted a link to some C25K specific videos that you can watch as you do your runs on the gym treadmill. Posted it a few days ago

I started on treadmill but was never really sure what speed to set it at

Personally I prefer being out and about - and I'm then in charge of my pace

Guess it's all down to personal preference and I suspect that when the shorter, darker days are here I'll move inside for more of my runs again

Yesterday I just followed everyone's good advice and took it slowly but it was strange I found the brisk walk more painful than the slow jog lol
