Water while running: Hi everyone, do any of u... - Couch to 5K
Water while running
Unless you are on medication or have some specific conditions, in the UK you should not need to drink for any run up to about an hour long, provided you are well hydrated beforehand.
The NHS recommend that you drink 1.2litres per day. If exercising you need considerably more. I drink more than twice that amount daily. Your intake needs to be evenly distributed throughout the day. If you check the colour of your per, it should be a pale straw colour. If yellow, you are under hydrated.
I never take any during 5 or 10K. Try and keep well hydrated a day before the run (l drink approx 2 litres) and before the run you also should have some but not too much, a glass for me (l tend to run in the morning, before breakfast). Your body is a good reservoir Than again, this is what works for me and you need to find out what is best for you.
I take one of those little runner's oval bottles that you can hold onto.
I sip from it as I find I get a little dry, it's probably psychosomatic, but I find I feel better doing it. And post run I make sure I drink the same amount. It's probably only in all a third maybe half a pint, but it works for me....
I couldn't cope with carrying a litre or half litre as they would be too heavy and get in the way.
But the sippy bottle is fine, albeit it looks a bit babyish!
A 300ml hand grip bottle is cheap as chips from SD shop. If you feel you need one then take one. You might find you hate carrying it though 😃
I've always carried one on this program & as Hidden sats probably psychosomatic, getting dry, when I forgot my bottle one time, the run wasn't my best but there was other factors involved too. It's a small bottle with a handle & yes it sloshes around so can be a distraction.
Holding a bottle in your hand means you are not symmetrical, nor are your hands relaxed, as they should be for good running posture. I will make a rash sweeping statement and say that you rarely see an experienced runner carrying a bottle and definitely never see a professional runner carrying a bottle.
Listen to IannodaTruffe he is right... I had to buy water only once on a, less than 5K run... it was mega hot and I had to pour it over my head
Hydration all the time is a priority for us all
Maybe it's akin to lucky pants....???- I had a good run with water, a bad one without Yikes!
I know Hidden is in a hot climate, so I guess the need may be different there
When I first started running I couldn't manage without a water bottle, more to wet the lips than anything else. Over time I became less reliant on it and started mostly going out without water. I now only take water out if I am going out for more than an hour or so, or if it is very, very hot. I got myself a belt that has 2 bottles that slot into it (so I am balanced and hands free). I only put in what I think I will need to minimise weight. I always carry a bit of money for emergencies and have been known to buy a bottle of water. Beware of trying to drink ice cold water, not a good idea!
When I started the programme and was running in the gym on a treadmill I had my water to hand, but once I progressed outside I couldn't be doing with it. It would be one more thing that I would be faffing about (and I gave plenty of faffage as it is). I do always make sure I drink the evening before (water that is) and have a cuppa before I run -I'm a morning runner so run before breakfast, but can't get going without a decent mug of tea! 🤓
