I'm 60, retired for three years and the pounds are slowly creeping on. I'm probably the least fit I've been for years.
I did my first C25K session this morning and only managed 5 out of 8 of the runs, and I went SO slowly. It's going to take me much longer than the nine weeks!
You will be surprised! 5 weeks ago I was dreading running for 90 seconds (and I mean dreading, I was sure I would have a heart attack or something) but today ran 20 minutes none stop. Stick with it and keep posting the support on here is just as important and really helps.
Don't worry Bodge. Just take your time with the program and it will really start to pay off. It's very well thought out and it surprisingly works as long as you take your rest days between run days. And congratulations for starting the program. It's a wonderful thing you've done for yourself here. The nice thing about running is it's so personal to everyone. You can go at exactly the pace you like. Best of luck! ππΌππΌ
Welcome to the running family Bodge...you couldn't have a nicer bunch of people encouraging you...they have worked wonders for me...I have just got back from W4R1...I never thought I could do it but I just have!! Take it steady...try not to be disappointed if you have a bad run, treat it as a practice run....listen to me giving out advice???!!!!! Ha ha....good luck Bodge xxx
I'm 65 and have always been quite active, waking etc but have not run since schooldays. 90 seconds in weeks 2 and 3 were hard and the thought of 5 minutes in week 4 was really daunting, I am now in week 8 and running for 28 minutes, I can't believe it. Have faith in the programme maybe repeat a week , have an extra rest day but just keep going. If I can do it anyone can.
Congratulations on starting the programme! You will be amazed how your fitness will improve over the weeks. Lots of folk, including me, take longer than the nine weeks so don't worry about that. Take it steady, nice and slow and enjoyπ best of luck
Welcome aboard! Not that long ago 60 seconds of running was the definition of torture. Today I did the first run of week 8, 28 minutes, and found it more comfortable than the runs in the early part of the programme. The advice and encouragement given by the good folks on this forum has been invaluable to me, take it easy and don't try to rival Mo Farrah just yet!
Keep at it there's no rush,Just keep trying and you will get there . We are similar age I'm 60 in April next year . I'm redoing the programme after a 3 year absence from running . I'm on week 3 . You can do it !
You'll be fit as a pin and running for 30 minutes in no time, trust the programme and odn't look toof ar ahead. Good luck!
There's nothing much else to say, you kicked the couch you've started running - oh and you've joined the best most friendly, supportive running club in the world. Well done you and enjoy the ride. Looking forward to hear how you get on.
I will be 60 on Friday and have completed the 'programme' . Always kept sort of fit but never ever considered running πββοΈ. So my challenge for the start of my 6th decade was to run 5 K and go to India !!! Well I followed the programme and 'did it' not easy and thought I was going to keel over several times, but took everyone's advise and slow and steady really did work . I was overtaken but walkers, children, dogs but kept on going. Now running 5K 2-3 times a week and ran in Race for Life !!!! So India now booked - Happy Days !!! You will succeed ππππ
Welcome to the madhouse, it doesn't matter if it takes longer, just go at your pace. The best thing is you are doing it and one run at a time you will get there in the end. Good luck π
I'm new to this aswell! Did my second run today and felt I did a tiny bit better - the leg pains and out of breath feeling wasn't quite as bad (still bad though)π€£
My ribs ached this morning but my legs didn't this time - This time I snail ran in proper supported gym leggings rather than my everyday ones which I felt helped Bodge x
I am 66 and couldn't run for toffee in April - and now I can run for a solid 45 mins really really slowly (and only once- my first and so far only 5k). Imbue the whispering grass, bricks, tarmac, walls, shores, hedges on your route with the words of every encouraging post you read. Enjoy the trip and don't be a stranger. πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈ
Hi Bodge, welcome. This forum is brilliant! I'm 61 and running for the first time ever; currently on W6 and due to do R3 tomorrow. You'll really enjoy the challenge; good luck and keep posting,
Don't worry about going slowly, it has taken me 12 weeks to get to week 8. It's better to do it when you are ready, then you will feel more confident. Keep going!
You will be surprised, I'm 59 and thought I'd never get to 9 weeks. Not only did I get to 9 weeks but just finished my 3rd parkrun, and don't tell anyone but I'm enjoying it. Good luck.
In March 2017 I completed my first 10k event. To celebrate my 60th birthdayπ

Hi Bodge, I'm about the same age as you and earlier this year I was in the same position as you and then a friend told me about C25K. That was a turning point and I haven't looked back since. Now a few months on I'm no longer on the couch, fitter, stronger and leaner. There are tough times, euphoric times and times when you'll feel like a 16 year old again! You are strong and can do this slowly and steadily always believing in the programme and enjoying the support from this amazing forum. Keep running and posting. πββοΈπββοΈπ ππ
Well done for making a start. You will get loads is support on here. If you find things difficult (we all do at sometime) just slow it down and keep going. πI can't believe I have finished the programme and now run regularly. Can't say it is easy, but the feeling you have afterwards is just great. With the added bonus of keeping you fit. ππ½ββοΈWhat's not to like π
I too have reached 60 this year and started c25k. After 2 weeks have given up due to back pain. I am doing exercises to strengthen my back and then hope to return gently to running.
Keep going I used to run 5x4miles a week and it is fab!
Oh dear, that doesn't sound good. Good luck with your recovery.
