The small one and I ran race for life

I am so proud of my little trooper! I was originally signed up to the race for life 10k and was so looking forward to it on my usual stomping ground. However, the small one decided that she would like to run the 5k race for life and raise money for children with cancer. To be fair she has been running 5k parkrun with me and joined the 10 club recently. Due to the route, I couldn't do the first lap with the small one, watch her over the finish line and then carry on for the second lap so I had to downgrade to 5k. Anyway we set out today in our pink tops and rainbow tutu's to join the runners on the start line. Off we went on familiar turf in a good time for a warm run. The small one was overtaking walkers and slower runners with such ease as I told her the miles done with lots of encouragement. The atmosphere was great as we ran down closed off roads with clapping spectators. Back into the common and hey we had done over two miles, what a star she was. I had to slow her a few times as she was getting a little ahead of her pace and the finish was not yet in sight. We ran on down a road to where I thought we should loop back to the finish but no we were directed further down the road and then back along the other side. As we actually crossed back in to the common again my garmin showed 5k completed. Mmm the small one was getting a little tired now and I had already blagged that we only had a very short way to go so here we were running past a 500m sign a way out from the finish! We took a turn onto the grass, freshly mowed with loose grass everywhere with the small one complaining that she couldn't run on grass. I know the feeling but slow and steady I told her and off she went. Up the side of the tree line and back onto the tarmac path towards the finish. On seeing the finish the small one took off into a sprint with a little way to go. Hot footing behind her I am having to sprint earlier than planned! I have no idea where the sprint energy came from but it was an absolute buzz to cross that line side by side with my 7 year old small one. I stopped my garmin at the finish and we had run 3.8 miles or 6k. Apparently several complaints were made about the length of the course being incorrectly measured but for me it was great especially as I was going for a 10k originally. For the small one it was her furthest run to date and I am the proudest mum!

What a lovely post. Well done to both of you. Give the small one a hug 🤗

She has had hugs and treats. Her fundraising has just come to £100 which is fantastic.

Brilliant run H and great report. Oops on the measuring.......

in reply toMillsie-J

I had to laugh about the measuring! I think the 10k was 11.6k instead which I would have found a challenge had I run that route! At least it wasn't short.

Lovely photo and every right to have a proud Mum day, make sure you tell her how proud of her we all are and well done from us.

Thank you RFC she is a star and will be reminded often! She ran it in 41 minutes which I think was brilliant.

I love your tutus :) Congratulations to the little one - that's a fair distance for a 7 year-old, and a cracking time! Running with your child is a rewarding experience and they sometimes keep going. Kiddo joined me on C25K at week 4 aged 15, and now we sign up for 10k races together.

That sounds fab running 10k with kiddo. I really hope mine keep running and we can conquer more races when she is older. I love running with the small one and small two as well. It is hugely rewarding teaching them and seeing them achieve their goals. I don't know where they get their energy from for long sprint finishes though!
