Make or break time

Hi all, I thought I'd write a little post as since graduating I'd fallen off the wagon a bit. Firstly the heat got to me, and I'd only completed two runs, the latter of which had fallen well short of 30 minutes. Then came Glastonbury! A long weekend of revelling, not compatible with running (I checked on running forums, in case I was being wuss). So here I was today, 8 days without having run at all and, I'll admit, wondering whether this was the point that I'd stop altogether. It sounds like blasphemy to say it here, on this forum full of positivity, but as a chronic procrastinator and seeker of all things easy, old habits die hard.

BUT, I went out. In the rain. I even felt all good and springy initially too, though it did get hard as expected. Including a bit of warm up walking at the start, I managed 32 minutes and am full of optimism that I can manage longer next time. This community has a huge part to play in the decision to keep going. I so often look to you all for inspiration and motivation and find it by the bucketload. So if anyone feels like they are losing their way, I'd urge you to get back on the horse and take it one run at a time. You can do it!

As a fellow procrastination specialist I get that completely. Hope you had a fantastic time at Glastonbury. Radiohead's set was brilliant, unfortunately I could only watch it on the TV with a bottle of plonk. Well done for getting back out there after your 8 day holiday from running. 👍

Thanks Damien, it's good to know that there are other major procrastinators out there, with a bit of an extra struggle 😉 Thanks, it was a really great weekend! Radiohead' set was awesome, and watching it at home with vino sounds like an ideal way to have enjoyed it (a better view too probably!) My personal highlight were Foo Fighters; it was the best thing I've ever seen! I'm reassured now that a little holiday from running isn't the end of the world, as long as it's not an indefinite one ☺️ hope yours is going well!

Forgot about Foo Fighters. Yes that was also excellent. Ed Sheeran must be taking home a packet, one man show, he too was pretty impressive. For me it was Radiohead, loved that band . Great to see them live again even through a flat screen a few hundred miles away.

Don't feel guilty about having fun, but watch out for the gremlins when you get home. Thy have surprisingly good arguments for not stepping out of the door, but if you can get that far, you've won the battle. Well done for sticking the remote in his gob and getting back out there - eight days isn't enough to lose the knack, believe me. I'll be keeping an eye on you to see when you get back out there again ;)

You're so right, it seems like a holiday bolsters the gremlins a bit, but I'm glad the battle was won today. Having fun and running often co-exist happily but I suppose running has to take a back seat sometimes, and it's reassuring to know that it's not back to square one after a week. Yes, please do keep tabs on me! 😊

I live in Glastonbury. Am hoping to get out and film one of the episodes of the C25k videos on teh festival site in the next week or two once the cleanup crews have done their thing. Outside of festi week it is a popular route for dogwalkers and runners. There is usually a and 10k race round the site in August but it is having a fllow year this year. always fun running round the Pyramid stage and the pirat ship etc. Looks very different without the crowds.

I also live fairly local and have done the Pilton 10k around the festival site which was great :-)

Having also attended the festival this year I have also been feeling guilty about my lack of running.... BUT after checking my step count I noticed that I had walked 42 miles so that's something :-)

Wow, I can't imagine what it's like without the crowds but can definitely see how it'd be a fun route to take! Will have to look out for your video. Would love to have a crack at that 10k one year!

Hope you enjoyed too AndyD! Yes, we needn't feel too guilty with all the walking done! It never feels like exercise when there's a cider in hand 😉

Yes, it can be hard to start again after a break, the thing to do is not think about it too much, just shoes on and out the door. It doesn't matter if you manage 30 minutes or not, just enjoy your run. xx
