Running in the heat

I'm a fully fledged sun dodger, I don't like being too hot it irritates me to no end. So, I was looking for advice, what do you seasoned C25Kers do to keep yourself from over heating in the summer months?

I know it's not summer yet, but it's 15° here and that's getting into the realms of the uncomfortable for me.

Thanks in advance

Early morning running worked for me 👍

Early morning runs... and a great sun run cap :)

1. Early mornings are cooler and fresher than evenings. If you can't manage that, then run as late as you can.

2. Hydrate. When it's in the mid-20s here I take a small (doughnut shaped) water bottle with me even when I'm only running for half an hour. Make sure you are hydrated before you start.

3. Run in the shade. Usually this means I cross the road a few times on my route and I can end up on the "wrong" side of the road (which doesn't have pavements) which would be highly inadvisable in the UK, but I'm not convinced it makes any difference here. Find a shady route with trees/water if you can.

4. Wear a running cap.

5. When it is actually hot, slow down (although this means you're out in the heat for longer, heat and humidity are energy sapping and you can't expect to run as quickly).

6. Splash water on your wrists as you run, it helps cool you down. Splashing it on your face or pouring it over your head could also help, but the latter is culturally inappropriate for me to do here.

7. If all else fails, run on a treadmill in an air-conditioned gym. But that would truly be a last resort for me and I've yet to succumb.

Wow, plenty of advice there and I shall attempt to take it all on board, I never would of thought about water on my wrists but I'll give it a go. I'm sure I have a cap somewhere, the wife says they don't suit me so hides them but I'm certainly not dressing to impress whilst running.

Early mornings are out for me, I've got 4 kids to get ready for school, so I may make my runs a bit later in the evening which may mean pushing my dinner back, I don't want to go out on a full stomach.

Thanks again, much appreciated

Eat earlier, run later! If you're in the UK you have lovely light evenings till quite late. Could you run at 9 or 9:30?

Don't bother with a cap if it's dark - it's just to keep the sun off you ;)

I have 3 kids to get ready fr school but just get up at Zero Dark Thirty, do my running and workout, shower and get their lunchboxes and breakfasts sorted before they wake up.

At this time of year it is most agreeable. In December, not so much.

Serious hardcore commitment as ever, Rig.

Doffs running cap and does 10 squats.

Sorry sir, no sir, just getting back into running after a bit of a break sir and (looks down at feet and shuffles nervously) I didn't do any while I wasn't running.

;)

squats are for life not just for Christmas.

Do 10 every minute on the minute for 10 minutes.

Did it for 5 minutes. Will work my way up, a la C25K. Seriously doubt my ability to do stairs tomorrow otherwise...

Again I would love to, but leaving a 2 year in the house is probably not a great idea, Wednesday and Friday I'll be able to go after I've dropped him at nursery as I don't start work till later on those days but Monday, it's drop him off and straight to work

Because i start work very early and finish very late , most of my runs got done between 2200 and midnight . Loved those nights , no one about pavements empty . Maybe try different times of day and see which suits your body and head best

Suffer and sweat !! Take water out. It is fine running early but if you have a race coming up you do need a bit of practice in the likely conditions.
