Just done my second run, I never knew I'd be in so much pain. Calf and shins hurt like hell....someone tell me the pain will go away soon 😫

Hi...and ouch! So... were you warmed up properly, and were you taking it slow and steady ?
Looking at your first post, I feel maybe, you are pushing too hard, too soon? Our bodies do protest at different exercise, but they do let us know if things are not right!
The idea, as you know...is to progress at a comfortable pace, and to get to the Graduation podium injury free and having had fun too !
As the runs get longer, it is so easy to end up on the IC, as many of the Graduates will tell you, ( not just me, being a windy old thing)...the time for distance and speed comes later, and it does come.. honestly!
So... rest, massage, keep moving ( dog walk?) and then head out again slowly..
" Fast enough to get there, slow enough to see"
I feel you're right, I think I way over did it on Monday. Today was much slower and half a K shorter.
Onwards and upwards roll on Friday 👍🏻
No worries... honestly, you know what you are doing...just go steady.
I was the original Old Grey Snail...not any more though.. it just progresses... and I am able to run 10K now and have the ability to have a few speed runs too ( with a tail wind)!!!! But, I have terrific fun and touch wood, the only injuries have not been running related!!!
You will do this.... onward and upward !
Go really slow. I mean r e a l l y s l o w. Then it won't hurt so much. Also your body will get used to it. Also there is no shame in doing Wk 1 more than 3 times if that's what you need. It WILL all be worth it in the end
Good bits of advice there.
Roll on Friday, let the fun times begin! Once I get through Friday then I have 2 days to recover and start week 2 with less of a bang than I started week 1 lol
Thanks everyone for all the advice👍🏻
My calves were really painful for the first couple of weeks. So much so that I didn't think I was going to complete the third run of week 2. Week 3 I slowed right down and it was easier. I now have one run left to completion - and my legs still ache at times! But not so much, and some days better than others. I hope it will improve even more as time goes on, but the sense of achievement is so worth it! Take the advice given and sloooow down. Don't forget your rest days. It will get better. You can do this 😀
I found that it quickly stopped hurting. It took at most two years. Maybe three.
Seriously though, good advice already. Slow down, take it easy and consider slowing down some more. Also the surface you run on can make a difference. Grass and earth is kinder on the legs than tarmac. The hardest is concrete (think paving slabs).
There's a mild sort of pain that is our legs letting us know we've worked hard and it is oddly pleasant because of the smug feeling that comes with it.
But sore shins whilst running were probably a wee warning sign that you were going at it too hard. Better to progress at a steady rate than set off like a bat out of hell and then have to sit on an injury couch (or, to continue the bat metaphor, hang upside down from the injury couch).
Just done my 2nd and simply couldn't do the runs after 2nd so walked. I build tension in my shoulders and arms and hands and my breathing g becomes hard. I think I will repeat wk1 next week until I do it. Well done!!!
We deserve a medal for starting it!
I'm going out for w2r2 in the next hour, I really struggled with the first run with pain in my calfs and shins. If I can't do this one I'm going to get new trainers at the weekend, not do r3 this week and start W2 again on Monday, no shame in repeating a week. As my other half says some exercise is better than no exercise.
Keep it up 👍🏻
