I have just done Week 3 Run 2 having not run in the past. Today, when I started running my ankles hurt. I have never had ankle pain before. It seemed to get better as the run went on, but most times I started running, having done a period of walking, the pain started again. Any thoughts? Thanks

Ankle pain
Possibly the culprit is shoes, have you recently bought new shoe's? Discuss the problem with the supplier..
Thanks davelinks. No, I haven't bought new shoes. I've been wearing running shoes which I bought a while back to play tennis (I don't think they are worn out as I haven't played that much tennis!) They are very comfortable across the bottom of my foot which is important for me as I have got bunions. Maybe there isn't enough ankle support . . .
Check you haven't tied your laces too tight. I had ankle pain that started after I had warmed up and it was because my feet had swelled and the trainers were causing tension in the tendons. My ankles were always fine post run. Now I tie my shoes looser and loosen them off during the run if necessary. Hasn't happened now for months, lesson learnt!
I agree with Dave, it is definitely worth getting a gait analysis done and finding shoes which support your running style. I ended up with an ankle tendon injury soon after finishing the programme for not wearing proper shoes. Haven't had a problem since getting some proper cushioned shoes at the advice of the man who did my gait analysis. You could try running on softer ground, grass if you usually run on paths/roads. Maybe have an extra rest day between runs if you feel like maybe you're putting a bit too much strain on your ankles? If you feel like it could be tendons/muscle which are hurtng rather than joints then some stretches might help. If it continues it could be worth seeing a doctor or sports physio but I would definitely suggest a gait analysis as a first port of call.
Thanks all. I had an extra rest day and tried to go for a run today. I intended to run on grass but life got in the way and I had to make do with a run from my front door on pavements. My ankles hurt enough that it was clear that my body was telling me I shouldn't hurt them any more. I was supposed to do Week 3 Run 3, but quickly decided to do a brisk walk instead. I've checked and I don't think my laces are too tight. I think it is partly that my ankles are just not used to the exercise. I have had a good look at my trainers and had a bit of a look on the web and I think I probably need much more cushioned ones. Also, on the advice of my podiatrist I wear orthotics in my normal shoes (I've always assumed because of my bunions, but maybe it is more to do with my arches). I had forgotten that because they are just in my shoes all the time. I haven't tried to fit them in my trainers. Oops. I find buying shoes that fit terribly difficult because of my narrow ankles, long toes and bunions. I dread spending a small fortune on a pair of trainers only to find that they rub my bunions and I can't wear them. Any advice on where to go to get this gait analysis done and advice from somebody who knows what they are talking about rather than somebody who is just trying to sell me the most expensive pair of trainers they can get away with!
