Running with Arthritis - yes or no?

My husband has just been diagnosed with arthritis in the hip. Is it safe to start the couch to 5k? It hurts him to walk but he can cycle without problems. I'd be interested in what people think. Thanks.

A professional medical opinion will be worth a million replies from us enthusiastic but unqualified runners. Someone with a similar condition may reply, but bear in mind that we are all different. Frankly if walking hurts, then I suspect running would too and there is always the risk of doing further damage from overuse.

All that said, many folk on here have overcome all sorts of problems to improve their health and fitness, so if you talk to a GP then press them for their reasoning.

If your husband tried the first week of run/walk intervals he would have some idea of whether he is going to be able to continue. Best of luck.

I agree with IannodaTruffe it is best to get a plan with his doctor or even better ask for a referral for a physio. With the help of a physio I built my muscles up so they were strong enough to let me start to run. I have arthritis and it's all about how the muscles protect your joints. Stregnth and stretching work is even more important when you have arthritis as the muscles must be in the right place so I think if possible it's always best to get an opinion on this first. Personally my arthritis is always bad after periods of non movement so if he gets the ok let him know that once you start it's very hard to stop 😀. I wish him luck.

I agree that a medical opinion is what is needed. However, running is supposed to improve bone density, wellbeing and all round fitness. If a doctor says it is ok to proceed, he could always take it more gently - perhaps 2 weeks of each week and take his time over it. I still had aches and pains throughout the programme, so some discomfort is to be expected. Let us know, I would be interested to know what is decided and all the best for an active lifestyle whatever he chooses 😀

Thanks to all the replies. You all talk a lot of sense. I'll tell him to go and talk to his doctor first. Oh, and Happy Christmas 🎄
