Complete disaster! This was for PoppyPugs quest on Health Unlocked, Baldy dropped me into Virac in the car and I was meant to run back along the ridge to the hang gliding point. (D7) A nice little 7 KM all down hill after the first little rise. Well, it seems I turned right instead of left...I realised I was wrong straight away, after the first hill there was another one and another, and I knew that wasn't right. The sun was in the wrong place too. I just didn't know what to do about it. Sign posts are few and far between around here...After 3 or 4 KM I flagged a car down, he made me run back up the hill to speak to him....he had an inpenetrable local accent.... Cordsh Shur Shiel? shets par lash. um, say what?...at the next crossroads I flagged down another car - or tried to, she nearly drove into a ditch trying to pass me and didn't stop... I must have looked a bit scary....Next car had a nice young lady who said to continue on the road I was on but it was another 8 KM...I tried to phone Baldy, but had all sorts of problems, I can't see the screen without my specs... it's an Englsh phone trying to call another English phone from France... my touch screen is knackered...after another couple of KM I reached another crossroads, and eventually a sign! Hurray!! Oh no, Cordes 10 KM...I realised where I was, the main Cordes - Albi route, where cars belt along at 100 KPH and there is no verge...try again with the phone... success! Oh please come and get me Baldy! I thought he would be worried but he just sniggered...My feet hurt now...

Oh dear curly that soundsmore than a bit scary. Glad baldy came and got you! The song "I was lost in France" comes to mind..... 😕😆

Yes, it was scary...

aliboo70 profile image
aliboo70 in reply toCurlygurly2

bet it was a relief to find out where you were! :) but an over 9k run could never be classed as a fail.......... you sound calmer than i would have been! my sense of direction is appalling! :(

Oh goodness me how frightening for you curlygurly2, naughty baldy for sniggering. Hope you are giving your feet a well deserved soak. Think of what you have achieved though going up hill instead of down. :-)

Ok, I should really change snigger to giggle...xx

Curlygurly2 I would say that was a great run given the scary circumstances. Glad all worked out well in the end 👍🏼

Oh no Curly - how awful. Perhaps you need a smart phone with maps or a GPS handheld unit?

At least Baldy redeemed himself by coming to get you.

And it's was all Pops fault!

What an adventure! Although no doubt worrying at the time it will be a great dinner party story in the future! I agree with Ali - a 9k run isn't a fail by any standards!! :)

Wow! You are one tough lady to have kept it together though! And one tough Runner that your main woe is that your run was badly affected (you ran so absolutely no fail there after all!)

Most would end up catatonic with fear if all that had happened. You kept going til you sorted it out - I think I'm going to start calling you " Mrs Bourne" ☺

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply toIrish-John

I have no idea who Mrs Bourne is, please tell! Is it flattering? Xx

Irish-John profile image
Irish-JohnGraduate in reply toCurlygurly2

'The Bourne Identity' ? Jason Bourne? Tough Nut Extrodinaire Du Jour?

(although for my money John Wick would pound him into nothingness - and not even spill his drink while doing so LOL :)

Curlygurly2Graduate in reply toIrish-John

Ah, not a film watcher! Thanks for the info!

I was a bit worried how I would get home if I hadn't got my phone to work...still, if I'd have run it I would be asking for my half marathon badge now!

Irish-John profile image
Irish-JohnGraduate in reply toCurlygurly2

That's the spirit :) Maybe should call you 'Mrs Wick' instead of Bourne ;)

Curlygurly2 profile image

I don't know who that is either lol

Oh lord! Right - tell that husband of yours he needs to take you out for a nice night of fine wine and caviar, a movie and nice walk (run?) Afterwards along a beautiful beach.....or I shall!

What is the last movie you did see I'm now wondering 😂

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply toIrish-John

Lol, we have seen only one film at the cinema together - Captian Corelli's Mandolin, just Googled it - 15 years ago!

Where are you taking me John?

Irish-John profile image
Irish-JohnGraduate in reply toCurlygurly2

Well, the movie would have to be 'Marathon Man' or 'Logan's Run' or ' Run Lola Run' :). The Restaurant, Kaspar's at the Savoy of course, and seeing as we would be in London - for a walk - well it's YEARS since I took the Ripper Tour :)

Variety is the spice of life! :)

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply toIrish-John

Ripper tour? :-o you're scaring me now John - gonna cosh me over the head with your kitchen timer and rip me to bits lol!

The Savoy sounds ok though... xxx

Irish-John profile image
Irish-JohnGraduate in reply toCurlygurly2

Lol no :) I love history though and always appreciate a tour that is really well done and both the main companies that do that one make for an entertaining and informative wee jaunt :)

Oh that's rotten. Have to say I came out onto a main road with no verges on an industrial estate once. Luckily there was cycle lane at the edge and the lorries were very good at moving out - probably thought I was some sort of maniac.

secan profile image

Well, It doesn't sound as a "failure" but as a misadventure which you overcame... and you know how the say goes: "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger". ;)

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply tosecan

Well, you know, it took my husband 25 minutes to drive to get me, goodness knows how long that would have taken me to run! Still, somehow feeling quite pleased with myself!

AncientMum profile image

Blimey Sarah, that was a run and a half. I can completely understand turning the wrong way and getting lost - that's something I do regularly, but not, thankfully, in running kit in a foreign country! Think of it as an adventure rather than a failure. Hope your feet feel better soon and hope Baldy feels it's necessary to spoil you by way of apology after sniggering about your experience. xx

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply toAncientMum

Well you know, it was a bit unfair to say he sniggered, more giggled when he found out how far away I was...it was fun in a weird sort of way though..

Can someone tell me please, is the Garmin link visible?

Yes it is visible and very impressive too!

It is. What a run, Curlygurly! You're one tough cookie! But perhaps you need a new smartphone with a map on it?

stewieUK profile image

But still you managed, how far? That's not a F-word by any stretch of the imagination, and uphill as well!

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply tostewieUK

Yes, further than I'd intended, but it was the 10K that was left to get home that frightened me!

Irishprincess profile image

Blimey CG that all sounds a tad scary but look on the bright side. You did a fab run up some bu**ery hills and you survived! Your body will thank you for it come next run. You might even *whisper* do it again 🤔

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply toIrishprincess

Actually, I felt (rightly or wrongly) I could have done the distance home, 10 km, if it wasn't that it was dangerous and BB would have worried - that would have made a half marathon. Another time!

I hate when I mix up a route. Always turns into an adventure that's never fun at the time. At least you got 9k under your belt. Take it easy on the next one.

I'm already thinking "sod you Virac" and wanting to do it again...next week maybe!

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply torunswithdogs

Did n't you get on the wrong side of the railway tracks and have a very long walk home?

runswithdogs profile image
runswithdogsGraduate in reply toCurlygurly2

Yes, I was on the wrong side of a major roadway. Took forever to get home. Lots of walking. I still want to figure out that route but can't bear the detour.

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Graduate in reply torunswithdogs

I'm gonna crack that bu**er, going back up there tomorrow....if I don't go right into the village, I can't leave by the wrong road...if BB drops me on the route I want to run on I just have to turn round....wish me luck!

Oh Curly ! A special prize for you for going over and above the call of duty on the Quest !

Well done , that would've freaked me out a bit getting lost like that , but hey you did 9k -Woo Hoo !

Naughty Baldy for sniggering - I hope he has made it up to you :-) xxx

Perhaps I was a bit unkind, he just sort of giggled when he found out how far away I was!
