Gold gives way to green.. a rambler's return...

Five weeks away, heat, humidity and the lethargy of soaring temperatures and cloudless skies.

A French love affair... with water. Deep, dark rivers, shallow, sparkling streams, lost, languid lakes... and endless, endless draughts of ice cold water.

After my first early morning runs at the start of the holiday in the Dordogne, ( My last post), the temperature just rose, and rose. Early morning outings began to become impossible. If I got out for my run early, ( before 6.30), by the time I returned, it was already, simply too hot. The long summer days bought an average temperature of 38 degrees and we had two days of 41 and 42... the snail shell was cracking with the heat, aliboo70 , and the pace of my runs matched the pace of my old namesake. The Grey snail, became the Pink snail and gradually the running had to stop.

So... water... the only answer.. drinking it, splashing around in it, kayaking on it, swimming in it.

I started with glorious early, mist-tinged, runs by the Vezere, in Le Bugue... and, when the running had to stop, I kayaked on the Dordogne and the Vezere, and on one memorable, magical day, I swam...and swam, and swam, through the coolness; silken fronds of river weed caressing my skin, beneath huge, mature trees, towering above me, their green- laden branches touching the water's edge and affording a welcome shade; I swam, just above the convergence of these two mighty rivers.. above a stunning place called Limeuil.

Cycling, swimming, late night saunters by the river's edge and the hedonistic pleasures of the tantalising taste of French flavours, and days, lazily lost, in the languid daze and haze of heat... the homeward journey North, bringing little relief; and despite happy days, long sultry evenings, new friends, new places and the golden glow of the French countryside...I did, I confess, miss my runs and my forum friends.

So...back home and this morning my first run in nearly three weeks. Awake early, with the sense of anticipation prevalent, for me anyway, on Christmas morning. A slight apprehension also.. would the legs work, would the breathing be steady.. would I remember how? Silly, funny niggly little thoughts running through my head as I laced up my shoes and headed out into the coolness of an English morning.

No music, no podcast, just me.. heading for my fields. Be sensible, I told myself, you need to pace yourself. Down the hill, a brisk walk to the station and a slow, gentle run up the lane , to my track ways and pathways. The sky, laden with greyness, just the tiniest tear in the cloud, allowing the merest glimpse of blue. I was running just fine, the familiarity of the place, lending a steadiness to my pace. In my head, the familiar mantras of our forum. slow and steady, relaxed and easy. Loosen the shoulders, unclench the fists and enjoy the moment. I am unused to returning from France at this time...it is usually later, when Autumn already has a toe in the Season's door. The colour of the land, was a surprise. hedgerows, still thick and lush, the fields, cropped, mowed, and yellowy- brown when I left, have a dense crop of juicy green stems, the early dew still clinging and soaking my feet as I run. My majestic Oak, branches still presenting a living barrier to the sky.

High above ,a buzzard is mewing, and in front of me, as I run, the English countryside stretches into the far haze of the hills of the Staffordshire moorlands and into Derbyshire. The air in France, is clear and unmistakable. The air here is closer and has a fuzziness this morning, it is wonderful.

The cycling and swimming have obviously kept me healthy. I was running with no shortness of breath and a really even stride. Across the big field.. the golden crop has gone and the land lies heavy, newly ploughed, rich and loamy, waiting for the next sowing. The footpath has gone.. ploughed over, with just the first signs of footprints, which will in time, beat down the earth and form a way through. Across to the next village and then I turn for home. Encouraged by my performance, I run up the hill to the Bridle path and then turn down for the station again. My legs were beginning to feel tired now, so I slowed down and by the time I had passed the cottages, I was almost down to a walk. As I neared the station, I could see the queue of cars..the barrier was down.. so.. a sprint finish and across the road before the barriers went up... Finish in style, ( as our Laura would say)... I did!

Gosh, it is so good to be back. I've missed you folks!

PS

Apology for a no-run ramble, I came over all Robert Browning, Home Thoughts from Abroad, style :)

Oh what a lovely post Floss. It brought it all back. I do love France and can see the appeal of retiring over there. I fear I would end up drinking rather too much wine and taking rather too little exercise though. I applaud your much more sensible mens sana in corpore sano approach!

I love running through the autumn countryside over here too, though there is rather too much muck-spreading going on in Yorkshire this week to make it an unalloyed pleasure...

Thank you... I did, I confess, have the odd glass of wine...or two...it would have been churlish not to! I am particularly partial to a glass of chilled, very dry rose... something which seems to be a dearth of, here in the UK... ( I bought a few bottles back with me ) :) The long lazy lunches... yes... very special!

Autumn is my favourite season... I have lots of poems, I have written over the years about Autumn! I am looking forward to the morning runs through the fallen leaves.... I started Couch to 5K in October last year and those early days are very much still with me...The muck spreading I can take or leave :)

Thank you, lovely person!

I am glad to share my funny thoughts and to be back with you and looking forward to spending some time today catching up with folks' running adventures. With the lack of the Internet I have not been able to see what people are doing!

Oldfloss, welcome back. I have missed you and your beautiful ramblings.

I only ran once in Greece when I was there in May, I ran while the sun was rising and when it did, it became to hot to continue. I wonder how people in the south run?

Thanks you x

It is good to be back amongst friends... I am looking forward to hitting the 10K mark, now I am back in the cooler climes!

I do not know how folk do it... I suppose they get accustomed to it.. I did take some photographs of a running group, and some solo runners, running in the heat of the day... I just know I got very warm and was very vigilant about carrying water to drink or to rub on the back of my neck!

Floss is back! Floss is back! All is ok with the world again 😊

I'm so pleased you had such a gorgeous time Floss (it all sounds idyllic) but such a shame you didn't get much running done ☹️

But the great thing about this running business is it's always there for us waiting for our return. And we're going into the best running time of year IMHO.

A big warm welcome back and I'm so looking forward to reading your beautiful posts capturing all of autumn's magic.

Big hug to you xxx

Yeay..how super to be missed!!!

It was a great holiday.. and at the start.. I did see some very cute( not mass murderer) runners.. plus a little pug dog one day, thought about our lovely, poppypug :) and spotted a running group.. so interesting!

I am glad to be on home ground and hoping to catch up with everyone's adventures too!

The autumn runs... yes.. I will surely be boring everyone with my autumn ramblings... :)

Me too... I have had golden days a'plenty... Bring on those misty mornings, a hint of rain, the scent of the damp leaves and the colours to come... Bliss!

Welcome back, dear Oldfloss . We missed you, your encouragement and your ramblings. Your holiday sounds idyllic and you managed to keep fit despite not running, which is absolutely brilliant. I can't run in anything over about 20C, which means summer is a wee bit frustrating, especially at the weekends. This weekend is another scorcher here - sigh 😪 I'm missing my longer runs. But at least it's cool at 6 am so I run then on work days, but I can't get up at that time at the weekend. Today I went out for a walk before my husband was up and just walking had me soaked in sweat! But I'm looking forward to the next few weeks, because I have some time off and I intend to run and run and walk and walk at home and then climb and climb in the Alps!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to JaySeeSkinny

Wow.... I so admire you..the heat really was too much for me..but the swimming etc did keep me toned... I actually came back from hols, having lost 2 lb...despite pichets de rose at lunchtime! :)

Thank you for missing me... I thought I might get lost and forgotten.

The Alps sound amazing... I had a photograph of my field route in winter, as a screensaver on my computer.. it made me feel cooler! :)

Take some photographs whilst you are in the Alps please...:) x

Looking forward to catching up with everyone and their adventures this afternoon.. well, it is raining, and it seems like a plan :)x

We don't get temperature like 38C very often, thank goodness. I couldn't run in that (like you!). I think 24C is my limit and they're normally crap runs. What do Africans and Italians do when they want to run?

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to JaySeeSkinny

Well, I honestly thought I was actually going to melt, one day!

I saw quite a few runners out in the heat... and really could not understand how they could do it...

i suppose wherever you are born and what you are used to, must have an effect..?

One evening, when we were further North, it was about 28 degrees and a running group ran along the river path behind our site... they did not go far though, before they were back.. :) I think they headed then, for the nearest brasserie.. run done..time for a glass of wine! :)

Goodness I wouldn't have expected it to get that hot. When I was in the south of France one summer 20 years ago, we definitely did not get temperatures like that. I am not surprised you didn't feel like running! It is so goid to have you back flossy, have missed your posts.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to boptillyoudrop49

Thanks. you x

The heat...yes it was really out of the blue.. the whole area had yellow heat alerts.. the day it hit 41... was really, frankly unbearable...Warnings were being given out about the old and the young, and being vigilant about hydration!! No worries, we drank litres! Strangely.. in Nice, it was only 28!

I remembered Realfoodieclub 's check the colour of your p**...! It was very helpful.

It is great to be back.. going to catch up with you and check out your adventures.:)

Oh Oldfloss we were there for a couple of weeks at the same time as you - WAYYYY too hot for running (though I am still on the IC anyway). We were camping near Sarlat and spent a very great deal of time sitting by and swimming in the Vezere (kids kayaked, I couldn't be bothered). What a truly beautiful place. We loved it so much we've decided to flog the tin tent (we were actually doing proper camping in France in a tent this time) and buy a VW camper for our semi retirement which will start next year. There are so many car parks where you can park a camper van and stay over for about a fiver a night we thought it would be such fun and no pegging tents out for a change!

Enjoy running in the wonderful English autumn (not today mind, it's hideous out there). I hope to join you all again very soon.

Wow.. I so wish I had known you were there! It is so beautiful...:)

Go for the camper van... it is a whole new game... you will love it and I know loads of places where you can camp!!!

Great to be back.. and the ramblings will start again! :) Run for cover everyone!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to useitorloseit

..and any stress you may have will disappear, when away in the camper van.. :)

We are not able to head off for a while.. because I am, (within the next four weeks) about to become GrammyFloss...and LMTB ( little mother to be) has had a few issues.. so I am staying close. :)

Welcome home our dear Floss,

Sounds like you had a wonderful relaxing, chilled out holiday, ( shame about the lack of running though )

We have missed you and your beautiful posts and this post is just wonderful.

A lot of us have been feeling the heat here and its been like running in concrete boots. The weather is cooler here today, but I have read that we are having another mini heatwave next week- Eeek !

I really cant wait for the Autumn weather , plus we get to read your lovely Autumn ramblings . Double Brucie Bonus ! :-) xxx

Great to be back... I feel relaxed and quite strong... my run yesterday.. well it was fine! The swimming and the kayaking were great fun! The cycling.. well at least there was a breeze in my face as I pedalled along :)

A few issues with my Little mum to be , but I am all set to cope with them and be a supportive Mum... fighting fit and raring to go!

I have so missed you and everyone here; the lack of the internet was so frustrating,.. I could not even read about other folks and their runs.. but.. here I am... cooler today and a bit damp.. but loving it... mini heatwave.. well I think as long as it stays below 35..I should be fine :)

Good to be home :)
