Wishful thinking! !!

Well folks I was going to try and do 5 km and surprise my family. As they all do running/ marathons. However it is possible that I have osteoarthritis in my knees.I have got to go for an x ray. So I do not think it is a good idea to run after all. I will stick with my walking. 😊

Hi Htrep,

Just to say that knee osteoarthritis does not necessarily mean that you can't run - in fact running can, in some cases, improve symptoms but you have to go very carefully using good footwear ( I have purpose made insoles from the orthotics dept which are ace - I have RA) and try a treadmill first as its gentler on the knees due to being more 'springy' than Tarmac and more even than footpaths that way you can 'test' running out before doing outside stuff. But walking is also very good for your knees and I wouldn't make a decision about the 5K until after the X-ray results.

All the best

Ali

That's a shame. Why not wait for the outcome of the X- ray then talk to your doctors about it before making a decision.

My running pal is a knee man. He sees lots of knees and he himself runs with arthritis. He says that not running is bad for your knees 😊

Walking is good though, and I am a big fan, and walk everywhere. That's what you have to do so make it a lifelong habit. You might be jumping the gun a bit though. I would wait and see

You would have to speak to own medical person . However exercise is now the NICE treatment of arthritis . I would say that you need to do some sort of exercises that will keep the muscles around your knee tightly engaged so that you hold your knee in the correct position, wear sensible trainers ( I would get gait analysis ). I know lots of people who run successfully and have arthritis :-)

Lots of useful advice here and as others have said don't give up. Doctors used to advise bed rest for bad backs and now they usually recommend the right sort of exercise.

My husband had a knee replacement six years ago and is close to having to be listed to have the other one done done due to OA, I have early OA in my left knee and hip. We are both on week 7. We had gait analysis and shoes fitted, we do knee conditioning exercises inbetween running and we both ice our knees after runs. Speak to a physio, don't use it as an excuse.
