So, I had a cough. Then it got worse. Then I couldn't run as I couldn't breathe (I find breathing so very helpful). So I went on holiday to Devon where I thought the clean air on the coast and long walks on Dartmoor would cure me and I would come back ready to run. Then it got worse. Finally I went to see my GP (husband and son insisted. They were becoming increasingly concerned I was going to either cough up a lung or become permenantly purple in the face). So I now have steroids, antibiotics, a new supply of inhalers, an appointment at the asthma clinic and a warning from the GP to stop ignoring my symptoms. I am asthmatic but have refused to really accept the fact so I never attended the asthma clinic and didn't bother to take extra care when I got coughs and colds. I just used my inhaler to get me out of the door when I ran. I am now stuck on the IC for a third week all because I ignored the symptoms and didn't seek help earlier. So to conclude, any of you asthmatics out there who think that you can ignore your asthma just because you are feeling fine and fit as you can now run and breathe at the same time, you can't or it will sneak up on you and attack when you least expect it. I really miss running.
Don't ignore your asthma or it gets worse.... - Couch to 5K
Don't ignore your asthma or it gets worse....
Sound advice.... poor you though. But better on the IC than really ill!
Like so many other things, best not to ignore the twinges... our bodies are very good at telling us what is what...if only we would listen!

The air quality is rubbish at the moment. I hope you recover soon. Don't worry, the roads will still be out there, and it's perfectly possible to run with asthma - loads of us do it, even in denial
Just had a massive coughing fit so getting back out seems further off than ever. Think I may avoid being in denial for a while but once I get over this hump who knows??
Oh, no Do you have a preventative as well as an immediate relief inhaler? I have a purple inhaler (Seretide?) which I take night and morning, and then Ventolin which I take before I run and as necessary. I hope you feel better soon. Be kind to yourself until you feel really better, though - it can take ages for steroids to clear an infection and get your chest clear again.
Thanks! At the moment I just have Ventolin but I suspect I am heading back towards using a preventative as well π. My asthma had been pretty inactive for quite a while before this chest infection so I hadn't needed one. I know it will be back under control again soon but I really, really want to go for a run π. Hope you stay well π
