Grass or road

Just out of interest (only ran my first run last night and only joined here today) do you find running on grass or the road easier? I did it on grass last night as I had my dog with me but was wondering if it would be less wear and tear on the knees if it was on the road.

I started on grass but moved to pavement as I always felt I was going to turn an ankle on grass but never did plus my local park is full of dog doo as at least 1 dog walker doesn't pick up after their dog.

I did my first 8 weeks on grass as I wanted to protect my right knee as much as possible even wearing an elasticated tube bandage round it.

Its only the last week I have been using pavements and to be honest I am more worried about turning an ankle on the state of ours than slipping on grass.

Hmm, conflicting views.

I also have a conflicting argument between doctors with my knee. I have osteoporosis so the more weight bearing exercise I do the better but I also have arthritis in my knee so should avoid weight bearing exercises. Hmm hard to please both doctors but better to just have one bad knee than a body full of broken bones.

Hmm, my runs take me across both surfaces. I prefer grass so long as it is not too long or bumpy, but can run faster on path and don't have to be looking where I put my feet all the time.

Maybe you just have to try both and see what suits you best.

Well done for getting started!

Grass is more tiring, but is supposed to be better for the joints as its a bit softer than roads and pavements - or so I've read. I decide each time which I feel like doing, and pick my route accordingly. :)

My thought is that both are good. However, I try to run more on soft ground - grass, mud and gravel tracks as it is less impact on my knees and shins. Running on grass is pretty hard work due to the uneven ground too and I feel every foot strike is different so it exercises a wider variety of muscles. I still run on oaths (never the road though, too dangerous) because maybe because of weather or going for a quick run, it is the easier option - or just for a change!!
