Running club...

I have approached the trainer of a beginners' team in a local running club 'Valbyløberne'.

She told me they are 4-8 new runners, age range 35-66, who meet twice a week Tuesdays and Saturdays and run 3-6 km, combining it with a bit of strength training.

I've decided to give it a go! It's not going to be until 14 June though, as I can't fit it into my schedule before then.

To think that 2 months ago I tried to run in places where I wouldn't meet people because I was too embarrassed.

I'm still snailrunning, but I'm not embarrassed!

Exiting times!

That's great news and it sounds great. I still want to find one as the one I did join was for very very fast athletes... It was awful!! Keep us posted how you get on....

Will do! Ran once with my brother and father in law - awful! Much too fast for me. And since then, I haven't really had the guts to run with anybody.

sound good, I have been added to a local informal running group, I saw on their facebook page they do 6-8 km but less than 5mins/km and often very hilly..definitely not ready to join in with them!

I asked the trainer about their speed and they average around 4 km in 30 minutes - that's me!

Hope this running club works out for you. I joined a "runners and Walkers Club" - however unfortunately it isn't working out too well for me. The walkers are too slow for me and the runners are too fast !! :( There are a couple of quite elderly runners (LONGTIME runners) who are about my pace - but they are not particularly sociable as we run. The whole idea of running with others is to converse with them while we run - I can always run silently by myself!! :)

You talk while you run !!!!😓🙃

Bazza1234 profile image
Bazza1234Graduate in reply toDessie01

Yes Yes - that is the only reason for me to join a running club and run with other people -- to be able to talk to them while running!! It is a vital element in training and can't be done by yourself!! :)

I don't hope they expect me to chat while I run... I'll talk when we finish!

That's wonderful.. and I'm sure you will enjoy.. what a great way to meet new likeminded friends :)

I'm hoping you are right, but I'm also a bit apprehensive about it. Running is still not something I just go out at do. I'm sensitive about being too slow, too heavy, too everything (except fast), but I got a feeling that the trainer was very much aware of how important it is for a new runner to be met with respect and the exact right pressure - not too much, not too little. Can't wait to meet them.

That sounds really good. I've just got in touch with a local club and they have four groups. They all warm up together and then join the group that suits their speed. The bottom one is 10 plus minutes per mile (that'll be me!) and the top one is just ridiculous! I haven't heard back yet but they're busy with events for the training sessions in June.

Hope you enjoy it all

Sounds like a great trainer! A similar attitude to my run leader..

"Too slow, too heavy"... too sensitive, maybe? ;)

I hope this group will help you finding a little bit more self-confidence and that you'll enjoy the company.

Lots of self confidence in other aspects of life but not in what my body can do. And definitely too sensitive about that.

That is great! Hope it all works out well for you:) I am sure you will enjoy the experience!

It sounds very relaxed and friendly.

I don't feel that clubs are for me...I enjoy my own company and that of the big wide world:) Lone Oldfloss :)

If it is not enjoyable - I'm out :-) But I have a good gut feeling about that group and it could be so nice to do one or two social runs a week. I will keep running solo too, though!

I think it would force me to try harder, as you would want to keep up with everyone and so improve quicker.

PippiRuns profile image
PippiRuns in reply toOld_trout

Yes, and to a certain extent that is what I hope to achieve, but I hope I don't pressure myself too much and end up hating it...

That's the risk. But you can leave before that happens

Just keep in mind why you are there - to enjoy this activity with like minded folks. I think you'll have no problems. Even if they are super athletes - you can chat at the end.

It's nice to have a variation in running, in a group & solo

Iben, that sounds great, don't worry too much about your speed. Like my running group, who cater for all types of runner, if you lag behind, the leaders will come back and drop in behind you..

Great news and no, you shouldn't be embarrassed! :-)

You don't have to be so sociable when running in a group, you don't have to chat if you don't want to, that's not what it's all about, some people have their own ideas of what it's all about....

I found this online....minneapolisrunning.com/5-re...

Very brave, Iben, but definitely a good move! I've looked into running clubs here, but they all seem to be at the other end of town or really, really professional. I think it would be good to have a structure and somebody who knows what they're talking about giving you advice and tips. Plus the social aspect and making new friends. But clubs tend to run in the evening and I'm definitely a morning runner. Just excuses, I know! Looking forward to your experiences!

Hope they're welcoming and friendly Iben. I've looked up some running clubs but I don't plan to join till autumn. In summer I prefer to run early in the morning by myself but for winter I think being in a group would keep me motivated. I also don't feel as if I am strong enough or fit enough to run in a group yet.

PippiRuns profile image
PippiRuns in reply toboptillyoudrop49

They run Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Not early, but ok. I can assure you I don't feel fit/strong enough to run with a group yet, that is why I have asked the leader so many questions. And it sounds like I'm in the middle of the group in terms of speed.

I am so looking forward to it now.

Where is the club ? Sounds good for me to do too !

Det gør det da i hvert tilfælde! Det er et svært sprog at lære for udlændinge, har jeg fået at vide, så det er sejt, at du er gået i gang.
