W6R3 done but feeling slightly sick

When I had finished the 25 minute run and done the warm down my head was pulsating and I felt slight sick. No rush of adrenalin. Strolled back home and feeling a little second hand to say the least. Any advice from you running experts??

I am not an running expert by any stretch of the imagination but one reason could be dehydration. I hope you feel already much better!

vomiting after hard workouts and races can be caused by the sudden change in effort as you stop running hard. As for cross the finish line or finish off that final interval, your brain, lungs and heart may not be ready for the rapid change in exertion, and your stomach may continue contracting, which can make you feel ill – similar to the feeling of being sea sick.

Make sure you have a thorough cool down and avoid sitting immediately after a race or hard workout. At the very least, continue to walk around or jog lightly to give your body a chance to adjust to stasis level and prevent stomach cramping

Thanks ViaM and DaveLinks. Also thought my definition of a light lunch may not have been light enough. What do you think re food?

I have always left it an hour after eating but prefer to run in the morning before breakfast. I always drink before I go out but don't need to take a drink with me as the longest I run is an hour, not going to dehydrate in that time. I would suggest slowing a little so that you can breathe well. I have graduated now but never gasping for breath on a run, I would suggest pacing urself. Otherwise, u could b coming down with a bug maybe

Hi Kay. I expect that either you are pushing a bit too hard right now or maybe the inevitable departure from a sensible diet that occurs at Christmas had something to do with it :) Those with more experience have some good suggestions. Hope your next run goes better.

I did the W6R3 on Christmas day and found it hard, but doable. I guess the point now is to get these longer runs to become easier. I had expected to take longer to get to this point, given our age, and am prepared still to redo a week if needed so that I am comfortable and confident with running.

When I first started running a few years ago, I often felt sick during and after the runs. It has resolved now though. I generally don't eat before I run - I leave it at least 2-3 hours. Make sure you are well hydrated though. I only run 5k and I sweat (glow!) quite a lot! Sip water after your run too. Good luck!

Don't know myself. Good answers though - perhaps dehydration, food, or you're under the weather. Look after yourself and take it easy for a few days xx

I had this often when I first started Kay . For me I think the sickness was caused by over exerting myself and trying to go at a pace that was too fast for me .

It all seems to have settled down now as I tend to do a slow steady pace and my breathing is fairly comfortable . I used to have headaches too through not drinking enough water generally plus I tended to tense myself up when I was running.

It's all a learning curve I think Kay, we seem to pick up along the way what works for us and what doesn't .

Onwards to Week 7 ! Good Luck ! :-) xxx

I felt like that on week 6 too, it's a weird one. Are you eating enough? I've found that I need to eat before my runs, I never eat breakfast as a rule but need to before running. As PP says everyone is different and you'll soon find what works for you. Well done on your progress, week 7 will be better xxx

Well done on your progress through the programme! I occasionally feel a bit sick and it seems to be when I'm really pushing it and towards the end of a run and afterwards. If I remember, a slurp of water and a spoonful of yoghurt just before going out seem to help- sometimes a bite of banana. Keep going😀

Thanks everyone. I don't think the issue is going too fast because I was only 'running' at 3.5 mph. I'd intentionally set my sights low for my first 25 minute attempt. Will try eating a light snack an hour or two before my session. I'll let you know what happens on R2. I must admit the treadmill boredom was intense but it's too muddy to run outdoors round here. One laugh was my soundtrack suddenly went onto shuffle and I found myself running to Zadok the Priest ....
