I'm feeling sorry for myself. My hip hurts. I jog 3 times a week and do a core strength session 1 times a week.

I really enjoy jogging and I don't want to just (ok what I mean is I won't) stop jogging.

Can anyone suggest anthing that could be causing it and how I could make it stop??

Thanks 😊

I'd suggest try spinning and Yoga, both I think will help joints.

Hiya. For what it's worth (from bitter experience) I would seriously consider resting it for a good while (and maybe using an ice pack regularly) even if it sets you back a little bit.

About 12 weeks ago, after working up to running 5K 3 times a week for a couple of months, I started to get an ache in my left hip on occasions at around the 4K mark but decided to try and run through it, albeit easing the pace right off. One particular evening the pain was a bit stronger but I managed to finish the 5K and walked home with just a dull ache in my hip & it didn't feel too bad the next day.

I had planned to do my first ever Park Run 2 days later, and despite my hip still aching on the Saturday morning decided to go for it. After just 3/4 of the way around the first lap (of 3) the pain flared up again, quite bad this time, but a mixture of pride and not wanting to fail my first Park Run led me to stupidly try to push on and keep going. After a few hundred yards I had to stop and couldn't even bear to walk on it.

Long story short I ended up being diagnosed with bursitis by my doctor which took 4 weeks to feel better. Thinking it was now cured I then started back on week 3 of C25K to ease back into running, thinking that was a big enough drop back. The initial 90 second run was OK but towards the end of the 3 minute run it flared right up again.

Cue several more trips to the doctor and a number of visits to a sports physiotherapist and I am now, about 12 weeks since the initial injury, starting from scratch again to be safe and last night finished run 3 of week 1.

I cannot tell you how mad I am with myself for not resting it up and getting medical/physio advice earlier - in trying to initially push through it and then going back to running too quickly and at the wrong level I made the problem last much longer and set myself back much further than might have been the case.

So take the warning sign seriously, don't be afraid to rest it and treat it with tender loving care and get a professional opinion if it persists. If you haven't had your gait analysed at a sports shop with the facility it might be worth it as well to make sure your running shoes are suitable and not affecting your balance/pronation?

Good luck!

Yes, this happened to me . I tried to run through it and in the end it was impossible and I was diagnosed with bursitis too .

Had 3 visits to the physio , massages and told to rest and given strengthening exercises. Mine was caused by over use as I was training for my first 10k .

I really think you should rest for the time being and see how it is. Sorry I know it is frustrating , but best to maybe have couple of weeks off now than a lengthy lay off later :-) xxx

I'd second the comments above, but emphasise that you should have your running gait and shoes checked. If you are over-pronating then your leg will be turning inwards and putting more stress on the joints, but then if you under-pronate or your shoes are not absorbing the impact well then the shock will be traveling up to your joints and could be causing this.

Also, try to be sure you are not over-striding. Advice seems to be that you should land on your whole foot - not just on the heel - since your foot helps absorb the impact.

Fingers crossed for a swift recovery.

Thanks everyone. I'm gonna (reluctantly) cut my jogging down to 2 times a week, I've booked into see an osteopath and am about to find a running shop to look at my gait.

About a year ago I had back/ hip / groin pain and saw a phisio that said my right hip was really weak and gave me some exercises. I'm wondering if I've let this slip and its weak again. The physio pretty much said "loose weight and it will be better- maybe try these exercises". Maybe she's right.

Thanks. You're right. It's not what I wanted to hear but I need to look after my body...

I found the article really positive though. Thank for the link cx
