Hi,
Most will either use an app on a smart phone or, and it requires some investment, a specialist running watch. I use a Garmin 610, but if I'm honest in don't use most of its features and my wife uses a Garmin FR15 which is a little easier on the pocket. Both allow the upload of your running data to Garmin's "Connect" website where you can see your time, split time, a map of the run and all sorts of other things, Great fun, but at a price of course.
"Other manufacturers of watches are available" as they say.
I use Runkeeper app on my phone, I listen to Laura and Runkeeper is in the background so I get both works fine for me
If you don't have any of these fancy smartphones or running watches, you can have a look at Google Maps of the area in which you run and measure it out on the maps. Although I do use Runkeeper with GPS to track me as I run, I always plan routes using Google Maps.
I just plot what I did into mapmyrun.com once I get home which is free and I have seen recommended by others on here.
I use the Nike+ app on my android phone. It does everything I want it too although it has been a bit patchy with GPS once or twice. (And it insists my local Parkrun isn't 5k!)
I use Endomondo app on my phone. You can use it for running, walking, cycling. It is great to see your progression.
I use goodrunguude to measure runs ad it does offroad too
I use mapmyrun when I get home. It gives distance and gradient
I use strata again free and gives good breakdown of segments too J
You could also try "mapometer" which is free
