Today is sprint triathlon day and I'm sat wondering why I ever signed up for it. Been awake since 5, stomach churning, heart racing - thinking about all of the stuff I have to take (and there's a lot of it) and all the things I must/mustn't do (who knew there were rules!) and the best way to get out of a wetsuit without looking like a ballet dancing elephant!
I blame C25k - I used to think I couldn't run for 2 minutes but having completed the programme I obviously now think I'm a potential triathlete or some kind of superhero
Good luck for today, bet it will be much more fun once you get started and you'll be fine! You ARE a potential triathlete, have faith in yourself!! You've inspired me, i've just logged on as having a HUGE lack of enthusiasm and needed a kick up the backside to get out of the door(i'm changed and ready and only going on a short run!) which you might just have done! Hope your jitters subside and you have a great time Couldn't get the link to work but hope you raise lots of money
Good luck - I'm sure you'll be fine once you're there. Don't forget we're with you all the way and will be cheering you on ... just in a virtual format
Some people say the way you are feeling shows how ready you actually are for the event and not really dreading it. You will be fine once the start gun goes - hope it goes well.
Hi everyone - thanks so much for all of your great posts and comments...makes a huge difference.
Well, I did it! Managed it in 56 minutes which I was chuffed with although had no particular time to aim for. I think the best advice someone gave me as I was queuing up to jump in for the swim was just to enjoy it...and that's what I did. As soon as I'd finished I (almost) wanted to do it again so can see myself signing up for another one soon.
Other tips if anyone is thinking of doing one:
- trying everything before the event itself - I was so glad that I'd tried swimming in a lake wearing a wetsuit, getting the wetsuit on/off by myself, doing the change over from bike to a run (jelly legs!) as it all helped on the day.
- don't rush between events - give yourself time to get prepared for the bike ride after the swim and the same when going from bike to run. I took ages in transition but decided that this was better than rushing and forgetting something.
- water and snacks always helpful!
- bodyglide - amazing product that stops a lot of chaffing
- agree with your family where they are going to be around the course and get them to stop there - the only downside to the whole thing was that I missed my mum/dad and little boy the whole way round (even at the finish line) as they kept moving and missing me! My husband was on the course at the same time doing his own event and didn't see each other either
- enjoy it! I chatted to so many people during the day who were doing it for a range of different reasons - to get a good time, to train for half iron man competitions, to celebrate a 70th birthday - but all so friendly.
Thanks again for all of your support and lovely messages - every one of them helped me yesterday
