New PB with hills! Did I cheat?

I ran my 5k today with hills in 29:43 which is a new PB. Yes, I jumped up and punched the air when I reached 5k :-)

BUT..... at 4.5k I got to the MOTHER of all hills....25% gradient, I kid you not. I stopped my Garmin, walked up and restarted it when I resumed running. What do you think? Does it still count?

Hi I_Will, as far as I am concerned - OF COURSE IT COUNTS. You ran 5k in 29:43. I doubt you gained much recovery time by yomping up a 25% hill. That is a great time....

Thanks! That hill seemed to be home to a plague of flies too!!

:D

You've made my day!

:-) 'Made my day' : that is the purpose of this forum!

All PBs only really relate to the route on which they were achieved, so of course it counts, but the challenge comes to actually run up it, followed by completing the 5k run, including the hill, in a sub 30 minute time. So many challenges. How exciting!

She is a hill like no other, and should be conquered. One day IannodaTruffe, one day!!

I have one on my home 5k route which I usually run down, known locally as Breakheart. On my first post grad run I was brought back down to earth when I attempted to run up this monster at the end of a 5k run, but eventually conquered it, as I posted here healthunlocked.com/couchto5....

These challenges have to be met with cunning.

Thanks, I really enjoyed reading that. After fitness levels it is all mind games I think :-)

I'll keep you posted

Of course it counts, and well done.

Next time, why not pause, and try some hill training? Sprint up for 10 seconds, turn and walk down...repeat as often as you like/can, and then carry on with your run when you have un-paused.

1 in 4...nothing...the short little blighter by our house is a 1 in 3 (very short stretch), but bl@@dy steep. Hard to walk up, let alone run.

Thanks....I like your idea. She could be my training hill! Warm up jog there and then hill intervals. Brilliant.

(Go on....get running up that 1 in 3, her very presence is challenging you!)

in reply toI_will

Oh, she is a challenging hill. I will conquer her one day...but not today.

I already ride up her on my bike on the way home, depending on the route, but she is an unwelcome visitor after a long time in the saddle.

You've got me at it! I have never before considered a hill to be feminine or masculine, just a hill. How boring am I?

Haha, I didn't really think about it, it just rolled of the tongue.....well, keyboard!

in reply toI_will

It's a bit like the old joke ~ why are ships referred to as female ~ because they always head for the buoys!!

Off for a really, really good ride now.

Haha, like it!

Your 1 in 3 will be waiting for your return....bike it

in reply toI_will

Slight delay in riding, but off in a mo. No 1 in 3 on this route, just long steepish pulls with fasle summits. Good job I know the route or I could be very demoralised by them.

I shall be a 'dirty girl' when I get back. Oh, matron!!

Maybe I should buy a Pashley Princess and wear pretty skirts and only bicycle on warm and still days???

That's me that is! *rings my resonant bell, looks unsophisticated as my flowing skirt gets caught in the chain and I disappear into a ditch*

Have fun! *laughs like Barbara Windsor*

in reply toI_will

They have skirt guards. I've sat on one.

You know its a cheat, you can't stop the watch, its not the same as doing a 30 min 5k. Must admit its not the sort of gradient that u would choose to run let alone to finish with. You can obviously do a 30 minute 5k - change the route to avoid the hill at the end.

I respect your decision on the cheating, although obviously I stopped the GPS too. I will do it. I'll show you .... I'll show everyone! Mwahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

Interesting running moral dilemma! I think you have to make your own rules. If it was me and I faced the same situation in the future I might prefer to turn around and run back down without stopping so I didn't have to stop the clock- we all cheat in our own way!

Congrats on the PB anyway, main thing is, you've done it now, and you'll most likely do it again or better in the future. Feel pleased :)
