5K Build-up run - another cock-up!

Hi all

As the title says really, miscalculated my 5k again :)

Bit of a bad run this one. I left work today having been chatting to my friend, who has run for years and completed marathons etc, and he persuaded me to try running on an empty stomach.

I normally have a meal upon getting home then go for my run about an hour later. However, tonight I just had a banana, four squares of chocolate, a cup of coffee and half litre of water before setting out.

Not sure that was a good idea! I think I had too much fluids as my stomach felt bloated not long after I had set off and about 2 miles in I started experiencing stomach cramps and feeling nauseous. Needless to say my pace dropped quite a bit.

I kept running as I wanted to at least cover the 5k but, yes, I stopped short yet again! I initially thought I had completed 5k in 29m 57s and was over the moon as I knew I'd had a 'bad' run. I thought I had covered 3.30 miles but I'd misread my watch and, having checked my run on Garmin Connect, I'd stopped at 3.03 miles! Drat! What a plonker ;)

So I'm afraid I still haven't covered the 5k! I had my watch set so that it beeped/vibrated at every 1/2 mile but now I've set it up so that it will beep/vibrate on reaching every km, that way I won't stop running until I hear that fifth bloody beep ;)

Thanks. I'm more determined than ever now ;)

Oh poor you misreading your watch! You are so close- you will get there soon. Sounds like you had a bit too much liquid sloshing around, or maybe a bit too warm? I know it was for me today. Best of luck for your next run x

I know, I was soooo annoyed with myself! It was rather warm as well which didn't help! Next time :)

Oh no! Isn't there a local parkrun you could do so you don't have to worry about the distance - you can just run it, get a time and work from there.

paul2014 profile image
paul2014Graduate in reply to PandaRunner

There is and I'm hoping to give it a go but I was wanting to run a few 5k's beforehand. Plus, I'm basically just stepping out the front door and running through local woods/streets etc so more convenient at the moment. I'll do it next run :)

That was my plan originally but I'd say go for it and run one! It gives you confidence and everyone is very supportive.

Well I'm going to do a local park run next Saturday so not long now :)

That is rather annoying, next run you will make the 5km. Time is still looking good though!

paul2014 profile image
paul2014Graduate in reply to Vixchile

Thanks :) I've decided to take two days rest as well and then go for it ;)

Vixchile profile image
VixchileGraduate in reply to paul2014

That's what I ended up doing and had a much better run, even though I didn't reach my target distance. I have two more runs in week 8 to work on that.i have my watch set to vibrate every km I find it useful.

paul2014 profile image
paul2014Graduate in reply to Vixchile

That's what I'm hoping re the extra days rest. My watch is set to vibrate and beep ;)

Hi Paul - Your own food routine is best! May be worth ditching the watch next time, if you are doing the same route. Take week 9 podcast and the mapmyrun app. After your 5 min walk start workout on the app and listen to wk 9 . You will pass the point you have run before and your app will alert you of each k along the way. Always good that your last 2k are taking you back to your start destination than you time for a cool down walk home. Good luck Paul! Have fun!

paul2014 profile image
paul2014Graduate in reply to carole01

Thanks, Carole. I had a good cool down walk today as I was heading 'home' when I stopped and was quite chuffed thinking I'd done the 5k in 29 minutes ;)

Using Google Maps, I have mapped out a Round Robin 5k route that, starts about 500 metres away from my house (5minutes warmup walk @ 10mins per K) I know the exact place where I start running and finish running to complete 5k ( it's an entry to a Golf course groundman's shed) This allows me to check my time every now and then to see if I am improving -- although I also use Parkrun for this too. Who knows -- Google Maps may not be exactly accurate but it doesn't matter, it is a set, approximately 5K distance over the same course which can be used as a standard.

That's what I'm wanting to do, Bazza for those same reasons. Once I get a 5k route sorted that is ;)

You'll do it next time, Paul and remember, a 'bad' run is better than no run! What works for one person won't always work for another; I usually have about a litre of sparkling water before I go for a run and not a great deal to eat either, and that works fine for me, but it won't for others, so experiment by all means but if something works, stick with it. :-)

Oh and definitely do a Parkrun! :-)

If I had a litre of water before I went for a run -- I wouldn't get past the end of the street - or past the end of the next one or the next one, etc !! :)

Miles_Yonder profile image
Miles_YonderGraduate in reply to Bazza1234

:D I'm used to it, Bazza; I drink about 5/6 litres or so of water a day, so I'm used to such a quantity beforehand but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone not used to it!

Hmm -- come back in 35 years and tell me how well you hold your water !! :) :)

In my right hand, I expect, the same as I do now... :D

Thanks, MY :) I think I'm learning that there are a lot of things to get right / experiment with before a run actually comes together.

Sorry to hear that you did not have such a good one, it's good to hear of others more experienced runners opinions, but sometimes it can all get a bit overwhelming & confusing. I think sometimes we just need to stick with what we know works for us....ie going back to your normal eating routine, and also listening to our bodies. Plus dam that technology.....we love them and sometimes hate them at the same time! Good luck on your next run.

paul2014 profile image
paul2014Graduate in reply to AmberC

Thanks, Amber. I'll be having my usual meal before my next run and I'm taking a two day rest before attempting it again.

Bad luck Paul -sabotaged by a combination of technology and dietary advice. We all have our off runs, so you will prevail soon. The extra rest day is a great idea. Good luck m'dear :)

paul2014 profile image
paul2014Graduate in reply to AncientMum

Thanks, AncientMum ;) At the end of the day I'm still out there running so it's all helping with my general fitness. Frustrating though ;)

Bad luck with the technology Paul! I'm sure with your determination you'll make your goal - you're almost there.

Thanks. So near and all that ;)

Doh! The old "metric vs imperial" balls up eh? Not to worry mate, that's still a great run... your heart and lungs say thank you and you learnt how to set your 620 to metric... win-win... :)

Already done. Should have left it like that!

Still trying very hard, I see... And you've ditched your running partner!

Is next time your first park run, or are you sneacking a run in between?

Happy running

paul2014 profile image
paul2014Graduate in reply to frannyfran

Lol. I am :) Running partner may be back with me at the weekend and I may have another joining me, my granddaughter :)

I'll be having another run this Friday and probably another next Monday and possibly another next Thursday then the park run on the Saturday :)
