Newbie checking in....

Hi all,

I'm 48 and live in Loughton, Essex.

I'm about a stone overweight and have cholesterol issues that I need to address - C25K seems a good way of starting.

Any advice for the unfit but repentant newbie gratefully received.

Hello! You're in the right place. C25k is a great introduction to running, losing weight and getting fitter. It starts off walking and running combined just for a few seconds at a time and builds over 9 weeks til you can run for 30 mins non-stop. I think by the time you get to the finish line you will want to continue to eat healthily as you're so pleased with your weight loss and improved fitness that you will want to carry on beyond the programme and make it your recipe for a healthier life forever. There are so many success stories on here, browse through them and you will get a handle on what folks are about

People here are very supportive of each other and successes and failures are shared experiences. There are lots of highs and lows, joys and sorrows.

Dive right in!

Welcome and well done for taking up the challenge! Be warned - it can be a life changer!

Slow and steady is the mantra. Follow the instructions on the podcasts, stretch out after the runs and take your rest days which are equally important. Come here to share your triumphs and your woes and you will always find encouragement and support.

Decent running shoes are important to minimise injury.

Just get out there! Good luck!

Hi DL, welcome. It sounds like you will fit in here just great.

I am only 4 weeks in, but this is what I've learned:

1) This forum is the most positive place on the web

2) Keep coming back, post about your progress, your successes and any problems you are having. Everyone here is very generous and will give you all the encouragement you need. We are already rooting for you!

3) Make time to get the 3 runs in every week. We'll all be anticipating your next progress update...

4) Please don't worry about what your neighbours, people out walking their dogs, anyone you meet are going to think. I promise they'll think "Good on you"

5) Take it slow and easy, and listen to what your body is telling you. Repeat a week if you need to.

6) If you have money to spend, invest it in a pair of running shoes, after a visit to a proper running shop and gait analysis.

7) I'll tell you about all the gadgets in a month from now :-)

Enjoy your running, post here often!

I can't add anything to the posts of my fellow c25k-ers except to say that it's truly addictive and the buzz you feel when you complete a good run is something to be experienced! So welcome aboard, you're in for the time of your life!

Welcome to Club C25K! :-)

Everyone above has excellently covered the wonderful benefits of the programme, so I won't repeat everything, but will say good luck and well done on making the decision to start. C25K really is fantastic and works so very well; you'll be so glad you took it up and by the end will see big changes. The only regret you'll have is not discovering it sooner! But you're here now, so happy running, enjoy, and do let us all know how your progress is going. :-)

You've made the best decision ever! I am almost the same age, and was in your shoes 2 months ago. I now feel fitter, happier and can now run for 6km when 6 metres was my limit. Everyone on here is really supportive and if you have any questions, just ask. Let us know how you're getting on and good luck :)

Hello and welcome.

My advice get out there and start. Trust in the programme, but don't be afraid to repeat a run, or to take extra rest days if you feel you need to.

Oh and well you are from Essex and us Essex peeps (even displaced ones like me) rock :D
