Sorry if this has been asked a 1000 times, the main reason I am doing this is to help me lose weight, I'm following the slimming world diet as well.

Don't worry about asking, I take any opportunity to shout about it!!!

I've been doing slimming world since March, and C25K since July and so far I have lost nearly 4 stones. Mrs Narmour has been doing the same, and she has lost about 3.5 stones. No doubt about it, they both work!!

Good luck and keep us posted with your progress on both.

c25k has helped with my weight loss too. In total I've lost about 3.5 stones since January this year, with about 1.5 stone loss since starting running in June. I've found that success in losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise, because even quite high intensity exercise like running doesn't burn calories that quickly.

I like looking at losing weight as an maths problem - can you tell I work with numbers for a living :) To lose 1lb per week you need to undereat by about 3500kcal, i.e. take in 3500kcal less than your body uses over the week. This can either come from reducing food intake or from increasing exercise or a combination of both. I only "burn" about 350kcal for a 30-40 minute run. With 3 runs per week that adds up to about 1000kcal, so the remaining 2500kcal deficit has to come from eating less food and going to the gym on my "rest" days!

Of course running is not just about losing weight! I've found it has made me look and feel a lot healthier. It is great to find a new exercise that I have enjoyed doing and the feeling of achievement after a good run or a new PB is kind of addictive :)

P.S. congratulations on the weight loss Narmour!

Couldn't agree more AlbionJen .... I like the numbers too!

The other benefit though is that as you lose weight then the running becomes better too ... either feeling easier or going faster, and if you get a buzz from that then it is even more of an incentive to be a wee bit more careful about diet and to do a little more running or other exercise. It's the Fitbit for me that gives me that day to day information.

Very inspiring thank you. I've been on and off with trying to lose weight since I started uni three years ago, it gets to the point where you want to give up trying but I'm now at my heaviest and I've been nagging my friends about losing weight for so long so this time I'd love to show them I can actually do it, but mostly for myself of course!! I love this forum it's great for support which is what I need!

I've been doing this & slimming world. Slimming world to lose weight (& am now just under BMI of 25) & C25K for the fitness. I find they complement each other. The running doesn't really help me lose weight but has changed my shape & makes me focus more on being generally healthier. Both help my confidence but the running helps my mood too.

Hi Jodie, doing C25K alongside a healthy eating /weight loss regime has to be the way to go- some excellent results in those answers you've had already. As waletta says, running does change your shape...my legs /bum are a lot more toned looking and I've only been running for 11weeks...I think it was about six weeks in I started noticing the difference.

Running is a great mood booster and in my experience, if you are happy and have more confidence you are more likely to be able to stick with a heathy diet( less ' comfort eating' ) you see results faster and that's enough to encourage staying with the diet / exercise. Not sure I've explained what's in my head very well...suffice to say when we are cheesed off its easier to eat, glue ourselves to the sofa, moan about our weight and this can spiral into a sort of vicious circle of eating and doing nothing...and so it goes on. To me , one of the main positives of C25K is how I feel in my head and that has a big effect on my diet and exercise.Apologies if this has got a bit wordy..I seem to be unable to give concise answers to anything :)

Oh Carole, you that that vicious cycle bit in the middle, well I know it so well & hopefully that has become knew it so well. All I have to do now is to find out who is teaching the chocolate biscuits to call my name & stop them doing it or maybe just change my name.

Hey there waletta...ha..who can resist a chocolate biccie ,eh ? I just don't buy the damn things...but I do keep some really dark choc in the fridge( we have to have treats...so that and a cheeky red or a G&T keeps does it for me ).You haven't posted for a while...are you still having trouble removing the photo ?

Yep. I've contacted one of the admin people hoping they can sort me out. Not much to post about at the moment as I'm stuck at W9 R1 with a puffy ankle. Have bought new shoes today though. You'll like this, I think - my lovely daughter signed me up for a 10k Charity Walk tomorrow. I've just opened my pack & the little darling has ordered me a size XXL T shirt. She's in London at the moment but she has to come home sometime. Maybe I should listen to those treats so I grow until the T shirt fits me.

!!!!! .......no, just rock the baggy look ! Good luck with the walk ...at least it's easier than running 10k (!) and you will have "earned" some of those treats by the end of it :)

As a student you will have loads of pressure put upon you to get work in on time and exams etc I'm sure so running has been proven to be a great stress buster. So when your brain feels addled and you can't take any more work/studying put on your running gear and get out there, you will not only feel good after but you will look good too. I'll bet you will soon have some of your student friends joining you too. Good luck with your weight loss, your running and your studies.

Thanks, stress is another major reason I want to do this as I know exercise helps, I'm sure it will be much more effective then stuffing my face with food as I usually do.

I've found that since I started C25K I've been less concerned what the scales say, and have started listening to how I feel, both physically and about how I look. The slimming world scales have posted a small weight gain for the last 2 weeks but to be honest, I've never felt better! and I just went out yesterday and bought a sweater that I wouldn't have been able to fit into since I was about 15 (long time ago!) so I'm not going to stress about my weight. I will eat sensibly and follow the habits which I have set up through 6 months of slimming world, but the weekly meetings are over for me. As long as I am happy with how I'm looking and feeling, I'm not going to worry.

I didn't lose anything during the C25K but did firm up, but in January this year with slightly longer runs i decided to make a more concerted effort and can definitely recommend myfitnesspal it makes you very aware of what you eat, so that you make better choices. I've lost over three stone and I'm now classed as a normal weight, which is the first time ever to my knowledge (was a fat kid and adult). Exercise definitely helps the weight loss but you have to change what you eat. Good Luck :D

I've lost three stone on the 5:2, going from an unhealthy size 16 to a healthy size 10. Unlike other diets it didn't cost me weekly fees and now I've lost the weight I only fast one day a week. I recommend the free MyFitnessPal app, then it's 500 calories two non-consecutive days a week and keep under your TDEE the other five days. You'll reduce your risk of cancer, diabetes and dementia as well as losing weight.

Firstly, I hate running. I’ve never been any good at it, even a million years ago at school. January after feasting on everything for weeks I was a fattie. My gut was hanging over my trousers and I was self conscious about it. 104.5kg and 6’1” I was too big. I’m trying to eat better and drink less booze. I still have a curry and a night out - I’m not joining the Seminary after all. But I have a light lunch and careful with some of my dinners during the week. I started the C25K and I’m on week 5. I’ve never missed a run (I’m a bit odd when it comes to tasks) and I’m now at 96.2kg. I’ve still got loads more to shift but I’m pretty happy with my progress. I still don’t enjoy the running. However I’ve more energy and feel happier. I think not having to carry the 8kg I’ve lost is helping the running too. Hope that’s a help to you. Good luck - you can do it. It’s a cliche, but take it a week at a time and you’ll be okay.
