Weight is going up?!

My husband and I started C25K with a primary goal of shifting the weight we've both put on since our son was born...but three weeks in and my weight is going up!

My Dad gave me the 'muscle weighs more than fat' lecture but is this true? Will it go down? I'm tipping the scales at 13 stone 8lbs now!

Your dad is right, you're getting heavier because you're building up muscles which are heavier than fat. You will probably soon realise that your clothes will have a looser fitting although your weight has increased. That's what most of the runners in this community experienced. You will tone up and get a slimmer shape although the numbers on the scale might say the opposite but who cares what the numbers say? You also will feel better and fitter soon so keep going and don't worry too much about those numbers. On the long term there are so many benefits to get from running and the longterm weight loss (of course a healthy diet is needed to achieve it) is only one of them.

If you want to see the changes running makes to your body shape, take your measurements today and take them again in a few weeks time. That way, you will have the proof that you are definitely getting slimmer (although perhaps heavier). Btw, don't be afraid to get heavier and heavier. Every body is different but in my case I only gained about 3lbs in total related to build up of muscles and since then my weight has been stable or even got down a bit.

Good luck for your running and keep going! You're on the right way :)

As nomoresloth has said, just about everyone who comments about weight whilst doing the actual C25K program, state that they've gained a few pounds, so nothing to be worried about there. Once you settle down into regular longer runs post graduation you'll probably start to see some weight come off.

True fact, but just keep an eye on what and how much you are eating. I had such n appetite when running that I was eating too much and had to check my intake. One thing or sure is running is better than not x

Agree with the above, but It might be worth checking what your eating (myfitnesspal app is great for this) to see if you are increasing your intake. Sorry to say this, but if you want to lose weight then you need to do a bit of both, exercise more and eat better :-) that's what I had to do anyway.

Thanks Phil, we use MFP but we did have a Reeeeeally bad food week last week thinking about it. We had a (very rare) baby free day so went out for lunch and then it was my birthday so there was cake etc and my mum bought me After Eights which are my absolute favourite! Just been food shopping and we are really going for it with the healthy eating too.x
