Hello fellow runners....

First tip= heatwave:

I got up yesturday at 5.15 ( yes 5.15 AM) and did a 10k...it was just amazing. Today I decided to do the same....however I had put my favourite running knickers in the washing machine, so I got them out and put them on wet. Wow that was perfect to cool me down on my run, which got me thinking...what about washing running stuff and then putting it in the FRIDGE overnight =lovely cool kit, or better still =the FREEZER although might have to go easy so as not to have a solid kit!!!

Other tips:

Always smile at other runners ( in my experience they never smile back but lets make sure C25K ers always smile.

Vaseline on the lips, they get very dry

10% rule...goes without saying

Always have a goal to aim for, to strive for, big or small that is achievable and makes you feel good about yourself and your running

a running buddy...big or small...or virtual can work equally well

join a blog....it makes life better

Not sure my tips are fit for any top runners mag but they are from Juicyju's (limited) experience!!!

I know what you mean about looking for ways to keep cool during the lovely warm weather, although I think freezing your running gear might be a bit OTT.

I was out extra early this morning & it was still 18c at 5:30 & I managed to hit my target of 34mins (blog to follow later) so I might get out at the same time on Sunday too as it was lovely and cool and absolutely nobody else around....and I'm being especially careful not to pick up any more aches an pains again so the target for next week is to up that to 36.5 mins which covers the 10% rule too.

Can't stand vaslene it's too greasy, but i do notice dry lips on longer sessions, so might buy a chapstick or pinch one off my girls.

I have ALWAYS smiled at everyone when I'm out, runners, cyclists, dog walkers even motorists - I think I might be overdosing on those endorphins - running just makes me feel happy.

have only ever run on my own, just so I can find my stride without worrying about looking too much like a pillock as I plod along. Although this blog is great, especially as every one is going through the same things and sharing the same experiences.

Happy Running

well done on your target..not bad in a heatwave...the endorphins are great...feed on them and they will get you there!

During summer I run at nights! :D From 10 pm, usually. But you advice is good. But I agree with MatthewW about chapstick and smiling - and most people smile back as well =)

good plan, and honestly...people do not smile at me...I ALWAYS do. MatthewW is so right about that....However my gear is a bit silly, I wear an orange flourescent sweatband and matching wristbands because...well....I can!! However I am toning the look down with more of a panther style.

I do not think that clothes make any difference. Maybe it is just too early for people and they still sleep while walking and can not smile? =)

you haven't seen me!!! No...people never smile at any time..honestly, perhaps its because I'm in Bristol????? If I am asleep I still smile,

they can bring themselves to I'm sure....I saw a man this morning that was so red and puffy I thought he would collapse. I grinned and said 'morning' and he smiled the biggest grin, it was great....that is SO RARE but then he wasn't a hardcore

Maybe it's that orange headband - they think you want to recruit them into a weird cult? :) Sleepiness seems most likely though!

Anyway, I think you've moved into the realms of hardcore now, so you'll have to stop smiling. He he! Well done on actually getting out there that early. I'm still thinking about it. :)

thanks greenlegs, I'm hoping to get out there tomorrow, and I have ordered some harcore kit with matching hardcore sweatband...I smile at anyone all the time its just not in my blood not to!! ( except in this pic...!!!!)

Then people in Scotland are million times friendlier - I always hear "good morning" and see a lot of smiles while jogging or walking )

Speaking as an ex-Bristolian, born and bred...No-one *ever* smiled at strangers when I lived there - you could live somewhere for years and still be an incomer! ;-)) Same as Gloucester where I am now...

soooo true. I find the hardcore ones the worst. I want to become hardcore just to see if they smile at what they think are fellow 'hardcores'. I'll have to start sprinting when I spot one!

Hmm, cool pants, that's gotta be worth a try! Like all the others too, although i confess that I'm very much a 'solo' runner, apart from the lovely Laura in the early days of course. But since then, always solo. And I'm SO impressed by the 5.15 start. Respect!!

you must try it...it really works.....cool pants= cool running. Thankyou...once I was out of the sack and running in the beautiful morning glow it was so worth it. I hope I can keep it up!

Oh, I have a tip.... Don't go running with your iPhone tucked down your pants. Doesn't bother you while you're running but hurts like buggery for days after and cocks up your screen for a few hours!

Love the have a target tip, I am struggling to get out there and need something to aim for.

C :)

P.s. love reading your posts!

Thankyou so much Crismatlotta....great iphone tip, I sometimes shove it down my bra when I want to keep a close eye on my stats!!

Get that target planned..small steps=feel great!!

Great tips. I have been away travelling for a week and haven't managed any running at all, only driving, so am feeling slightly slobbish. But it's 7:30pm and 37C here so the energy levels are low.

BUT early morning IS fantastic - definitely the best time to run if you can. Just you and a few other brave souls in the early morning light. It's lovely.

Not sure about freezing my pants - I think my wife might become worried that I was developing strange and unwelcome tendencies if she found me doing that. ;-) But using one of those little hand water sprays on your face and over your vest when you start off is a good way of starting cool at least.

I've not run with others either, but my daughter keeps threatening to run with me when she comes to visit next month (and she's training hard, which is most unfair... :-) )

And I don't find the lips getting dry either, so I'll pass on the Vaseline. But I do take a water bottle even if only for a few sips.

Great tips, great blog. :)

Thanks Landesman....a spray is a great tip, perhaps a water bottle with spray/ sip combo. Bet you can't wait to get out there again!!
