Love this, thanks
Completely right; thanks for posting. Let's have an "acknowledge your fellow runner" campaign, aka "smile you miserable buggers, your faces won't crack and you might be happier"!!!!!
Although in fairness the bright red face, insane smile, and the overall car crash that my fellow runners see when I get out there, I am not surprised they don't want to acknowledge me as one of them.
Fu€k it I say hi to everyone of them, runners, cyclists , walkers, and more recently canal swimmers...
Canal swimmers? Impressive!
Thanks for posting this Liz! I hadn't seen it myself, am I wrong in thinking you might be referring to my post yesterday?
I've enjoyed reading the article, and agree with pretty much everything, though I've got to say one of my downfalls is that if I'm running I really don't want to stop until Laura tells me to, so I often find myself jogging on the spot or round something as I wait for traffic to pass if I do need to cross a road!
To follow on from my post, I'm just about to start a poll. Please vote on it if you've got a spare minute, though it's clear what we all think

I'm prone to puff a "Bon soir" (or "Bon jour") to anyone I pass when I am out.
I figure the local dog walkers, kids on bikes, man who is ALWAYS gardening etc etc all deserve my poor French accent through gritted teeth
And since we are the only British in the village I am sure that the "Mad English Woman's C25K progress" is being discussed (and maybe bet upon) in the village bar.
I thought about posting about this a while ago.
It really annoys me when you smile or say hello to someone when your out running and they completely ignore you.
I must admit that many people do not return smiles and nods. I passed a chap a few weeks ago whilst running and I smiled and said "Good afternoon". His 'reply' was to look at me as if I'd escaped from somewhere!
As someone who recently took up cycling again as part of the C25K 5x50 team challenge, I don't think I have ever been unacknowledged - there's never any words spoken and usually not even a smile, but there's always a slight (as in almost-but-not-quite-imperceptible) nod of the head or quick raising of the index finger of the grip, which says "hi, I see you fellow cyclist!". So if we can do this while bombing along at speed and keeping an eye out for traffic, why can't all runners do the same? I reckon a second of eye contact and quick raise of the eyebrows would suffice!
I say 'Hello' to people all the time, and acknowledge car drivers who pull over to give me space. They probably think I'm bonkers, but in the country, by and large, people do still say 'Good morning' etc. when they pass on the road. The car driver thing is because some do still come dangerously close. I reckon that they'd rather hit me than a car coming in the other direction, and it is nice when people do make space for pedestrians/runners/ cyclists.
I always acknowledge other people, you don't always get it back, shrug. Love the article though, especially re. litter "So put that energy gel wrapper back in your pocket, or just use some of the gel that's now smeared around your mouth to stick it to your face until you get home."
I wonder if some runners are so focused on what they're doing that they almost don't notice other people around them. I hope so, rather than they are just ignorant so and sos.
