So, it's getting warmer. Who'd'a thought it?! I've been so hot on most of my recent runs that I decided that to hell with it - I really do need to wear something cooler than three-quarter leggings. I already had some LA Gear shorts I bought in a moment of madness a couple of weeks ago so no more excuses - on they went!
And actually, they were great - comfortable and cool and I didn't look as ridiculous as I thought I might!. Shame they didn't help with the run though....
I've had a niggly little pain in my left thigh just above my knee for a couple of weeks. It just feels a bit like a pulled muscle, nothing much, but it hasn't gone away and on Friday's run, it really started to tighten up.
After the problems with my calf, I have learned that it's far better to ease off and live to run another day than push on and have a three week break imposed on me! So, I stopped, walked, tried another slow jog for a while, walked again, then jogged again before my final walk home. I rubbed cooling gel and iboprufen into it and hoped it would be okay.
But on Saturday, BOTH thighs were really painful - more so the left one, and the pain had travelled all round the thigh. I dug out an old ice pack and strapped it on for a while and found a Tubigrip which I wore over the weekend and yesterday.
So, today was my first run since Friday and I was a bit concerned so set off slowly and steadily. I went down to another playing field I found last week (the places you find after living somewhere for 26 years!) and ran around that then back onto the road. I find running on grass much harder than on the pavements but use it as extra stamina training.
Anyway, leg was feeling not to bad but I was very strict with myself and stopped after 4K, walked 2 minutes then tried another slow jog, another longer walk and a final verrrrry sloooow jog. As soon as I felt so much as a twinge I pulled up. After a few really good weeks, when my speed has gradually increased without me even being aware of it, it does feel like a big step backwards. I don't mind doing lots of shorter runs but I do want to keep up my longer distances, but it seems that once I hit 5k, the muscles decide they've had enough. Perhaps I need to have a listen to the Bridge to 10k and work out a plan to rebuild my strength? Back to slow and steady too, I guess.
Anyway, It's my wedding anniversary tomorrow and hubby is taking the day off so we can go off for a walk and maybe a pub lunch - just hope I don't strain any more muscles!!
