Rectal prolapse

I have Ibs and always had issues with my bowels. I have issues with constipation and straining.

June this year my anus prolapsed and it was a big shock aswell as pain.

Since then I have been under the dr regarding this.

Prescribed stool softners- laxido and diet.

I can honestly say I haven't had a decent poo in years.

Well 2wks ago my anus prolapsed again- I went to a& e - who after 7hrs of being left with the beast hanging outside my body- to be discharged !

We left at 0400 and by 9.30am the same morning was admitted into the same day emergency dept.

The staff were very attentive- I was nil by mouth- drip fitted for fluids( as with the prolapse being constricted was oozing body fluids. 10 huge rectal pads I saturated with this. Morphine was given to me which didn't do much.

The medical practices and Dr examined me- said they would have to soak gauze in glucose to take the swelling down - which I overheard them say- was the size of a coconut!

Then the Dr started squeezing the ' coconut' which I can only say was excruciating and and most unpleasant- but again they were supportive and just wanted to ease my discomfort.

After what seemed like an eternity the ' coconut ' was pushed back in.

I had an appointment with a surgeon a few days later.

I was told she is one of the best and she was lovely- explained thoroughly my issue.

Basically after examination- my colon is restricting the bowel - hence the intense pain at times and the struggle to pass poo.

I will most probably be having keyhole surgery through the abdomen to pull up the bowel and fix to pelvic area.

This is reassuring that it will get sorted.

But I am living on laxatives and diet changes to keep me from getting blocked.

Sorry for essay but just so relieved

Hi Donutlovers,

Thanks for posting with us. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. You’ve been through a tremendous ordeal. And as it ends up, your colon is restricting the bowel😲. The keyhole surgery makes it a little less invasive and recovery should be lessened. I’m just glad to hear you and your med team have a potential solution for you. You've been dealing with this a long time.

We do wish you the best in getting through this and hope it is the answer you’ve been looking for. We definitely need to stop that prolapsing👍. That’s for sure. Please keep us up to speed as to how you are doing and when you’ll be getting the surgery. It’s an interesting topic and new to me.

Thank you,

Tom

Hi TomThankyou for replying. Yes something I never want to happen again.

Just waiting for an appointment to have dye going through my bowels / scan to see exactly what's happening and then this will determine the type of operation.

Yes will keep you posted and thanks again for concern- quite scary as you can imagine

So you will find out from the dye scans what's going on, but it's essentially two things at issue ...

1. Need to prevent the prolapse

2. The colon restricting the bowel
