Rectal prolapse

I have Ibs and always had issues with my bowels. I have issues with constipation and straining.

June this year my anus prolapsed and it was a big shock aswell as pain.

Since then I have been under the dr regarding this.

Prescribed stool softners- laxido and diet.

I can honestly say I haven't had a decent poo in years.

Well 2wks ago my anus prolapsed again- I went to a& e - who after 7hrs of being left with the beast hanging outside my body- to be discharged !

We left at 0400 and by 9.30am the same morning was admitted into the same day emergency dept.

The staff were very attentive- I was nil by mouth- drip fitted for fluids( as with the prolapse being constricted was oozing body fluids. 10 huge rectal pads I saturated with this. Morphine was given to me which didn't do much.

The medical practices and Dr examined me- said they would have to soak gauze in glucose to take the swelling down - which I overheard them say- was the size of a coconut!

Then the Dr started squeezing the ' coconut' which I can only say was excruciating and and most unpleasant- but again they were supportive and just wanted to ease my discomfort.

After what seemed like an eternity the ' coconut ' was pushed back in.

I had an appointment with a surgeon a few days later.

I was told she is one of the best and she was lovely- explained thoroughly my issue.

Basically after examination- my colon is restricting the bowel - hence the intense pain at times and the struggle to pass poo.

I will most probably be having keyhole surgery through the abdomen to pull up the bowel and fix to pelvic area.

This is reassuring that it will get sorted.

But I am living on laxatives and diet changes to keep me from getting blocked.

Sorry for essay but just so relieved

Hi Donutlovers,

Thanks for posting with us. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. You’ve been through a tremendous ordeal. And as it ends up, your colon is restricting the bowel😲. The keyhole surgery makes it a little less invasive and recovery should be lessened. I’m just glad to hear you and your med team have a potential solution for you. You've been dealing with this a long time.

We do wish you the best in getting through this and hope it is the answer you’ve been looking for. We definitely need to stop that prolapsing👍. That’s for sure. Please keep us up to speed as to how you are doing and when you’ll be getting the surgery. It’s an interesting topic and new to me.

Thank you,

Tom

Hi TomThankyou for replying. Yes something I never want to happen again.

Just waiting for an appointment to have dye going through my bowels / scan to see exactly what's happening and then this will determine the type of operation.

Yes will keep you posted and thanks again for concern- quite scary as you can imagine

So you will find out from the dye scans what's going on, but it's essentially two things at issue ...

1. Need to prevent the prolapse

2. The colon restricting the bowel

Yes. Exactly .

Had the lovely barium drink and 3 x 50mls inserted into my rectum. Not pleasant but when sitting on the commode and being scanned. I saw the prolapse in action.

Doctor said there was nothing nasty but it's a bad prolapse.

So my surgeon will see exactly what's going on and hopefully surgery won't be too long.

Still waiting for appointment!

Still waiting for appointment with consultant to discuss scan results.I am now getting more issues - more pain and everytime I go to the loo I prolapse.

In-between I get horrid yellow slime- and globules fall into the pad.

When I do anything around the house- I feel a movement and have sometimes deposited the biggest stool .

Really want the operation now.

This issue is interfering with everyday life.

Sex is no exsistant as I'm scared a lump of poo will appear.

Totally fed up. Wish I had the money to go private but I haven't.

Operation will be my new year wish .

Hope all had a nice Christmas

Ugh … this is not acceptable. What is the delay? Is everyone on holiday? So, if you were able to go private, the resources are there?

Hi.Yes if I could afford private the operation could be done sooner.

The consultant was on annual leave according to her secretary when I managed to get hold of her.

I will be contacting her tomorrow.

Why I have to have an appointment to discuss operation. Just book me ne in for it as it needs doing, otherwise another blooming wait for it.

Getting to the end of my tether now.

This condition is ruling my life. I can't work. I struggle to do anything due to then needing the toilet. Pain is horrendous at times. Surely a stoma bag inbetween the main op would have given me some value of life.

Prolapsing everytime I go to loo- and to push it back makes me feel sick- as the sensation is not nice.

Thanks again for your support, will keep you posted 😊

Please do. I wish there was something I could actually do. This whole situation is just a healthcare mess for you. I would hope others on the is site may be able to suggest a way to expedite. 👍❤️

Also, the consultant was on annual leave😲🤔. So the whole thing just shuts down until they get back. This is unbelievable.

Tried to contact consultant secretary but obs not in till Monday 6th Jan.Have had feaces incontinence which is getting worse.

I don't feel safe leaving the house - due to this- even tho I wear mega thick pads.

The whole situation is ruining my life- very depressed and fed up.

I gave up my job as a care worker as was spending more time in clients loo than with them.

I'm housebound as need to be near a loo and this prolonged wait for surgery is not satisfactory.

Sorry to rant but really getting me down

Spoke to consultant secretary on 6th Jan.She informed me that the surgeon is now off on sick leave and the clinic won't be open until at least end of Feb !

I don't wish my surgeon any harm and hope she's ok- but now I have to wait even longer for an appointment to discuss results along with the rest of her patients.

It wasn't the news I was expecting.

I totally spiralled down hill and my mental state at times is very low.

Symptoms are getting worse and I see no quick fix.

Sorry for rant but ......
