Diarrhea now on day 70. Polyps removed during colonoscopy

Hi

Make 48, no family history of gastro problems.

Have had constant diarrhea for last 70 days. Was referred to Gastroenterologist.

At my appointment he thought I had had acute gastroenteritis that had left me with post infection ibs. He said he would do a colonoscopy and blood tests, however before offering colonoscopy he double-checked I was insured, I.e. I had the impression that he felt that there was little point in the colonoscopy and that I would feel paying for it myself would be a waste of money (this is in private hospital uk).

Blood tests all came back clear, but diarrhea continued (upto 10 times in 24 hour period), and was waking me up most nights in the very early hours.

Colonoscopy was last Thursday and 2 polyps were found - 1x6mm sessile inflammatory and 1x20mm pendulated adenomatous - both in the sigmoid colon. These were both removed, the smaller by cold snare and the larger by hot snare. 8 biopsy were also taken.

Since this my next bowel movement was 48 hours later and that initially was more solid, but the last of it was more mushy. Today I have had 2 bowel movements and they have both been mushy and only 75 mins apart.

I was hoping that the polyps were the cause of the problem and that removal would solve the issue. Today's bowel movements have left me depressed - am I being too optimistic of proper bowel movements within 72 hours of a colonoscopy? My rear end has the same upset feeling I had in the weeks leading up to my colonoscopy.

I am also scared of the histology report on the 2 polpys especially the larger one as Internet searches indicate that size is at the more problematic (cancer) end of the scale. I am just thankful that I had health insurance in order to get the colonoscopy agreed. My follow up appointment is not until 3 November, which feels a long time away especially with everything running through my head at the moment!

Anyone able to give me some reassurances please?

I am by no means an expert but have you taken a look at other possible factors such as diet? Hydration? Fibre intake? If in fact it is the polyps causing the diarrhoea then 72 hours is probably not enough time to let them settle, if you’re still worried about it don’t be afraid to see another doctor for a second opinion. You’re health isn’t soemthing you should take likely and if you think there’s a problem it’s best be be sure so you can ease your mind. Goodyluck
