Hi jennwhite80,
Thanks for posting with us.
I hate that you’re having to deal with this, but I think you’re well on your way to getting some good answers. The sigmoidoscopy is done to look at the lower end of the large intestine “the sigmoid colon” and to me it looks like it’s just a partial colonoscopy. Your doctors obviously feel that that is where your symptoms are being generated from. It will give you some good answers and if anything is discovered a biopsy can be taken at that time.
Have you had any other symptoms? Is there a hereditary aspect to any disease within your family? Is there a history of cancer in your family? These are good things for your doctor to know as that could lead to some tests that could be beneficial as well. I don’t think I would go right to it being cancer, but I do know you’re on your way to getting some good answers. You’re not ignoring symptoms and that’s great.
If the sigmoidoscopy doesn’t reveal the cause to your symptoms, then you may have to go to another colonoscopy. If your symptoms are being generated above the colon, you may have to have an endoscopy to discover that. I say this to tell you that there are many ways to figure out what’s going on. You had the colonoscopy 6 months ago with abdominal pain symptoms then. So, your doctors feel the Sigmoidoscopy is a good starting place to see what’s going on now.
I do wish you the best in finding out what’s going on. I think you’re well on your way to doing that. It could be many different things and all we can do now is speculate. We’ll have some good answers soon. Also, please let us know what you find out. It is that type of information that can be helpful to others on this site as well.
