I’m 32 female, just looking for some advice really. I was diagnosed with piles by a sigmoidoscopy 5 months ago , I was having constipation and pain etc initially and never had piles or anything before so I didn’t know what it was but it was of confirmed through sigmoidoscopy I had piles .

Now since then 5 months ago I have had piles come back on and off as I can tell when I have them, but this time last 2 months on 2 occasions I have had like bloody mucous -attached picture not all over the stool just in little areas, on these 2 occasions I was really straining constipated that’s why I checked my stool out. Should I be concerned? Should I be asking for colonoscopy while this has happened twice now?

Any advice would be appreciated

Hello! Have you figured things out? I too have same issue with grade 1 internal piles. I received a cream and with fiber it got better. Now started again, I know when it’s going to happen because it’s a larger stool and hurts to push out.. feels like glass. Then bright red blood or what you show. So frustrating and scary..

I have had a stool sample done to check for blood and since trying to higher the fibre in diet, yeah it is scary . Dr thinks it’s ibs related too . I do have internal piles diagnosed last year by sigmoidoscopy but they haven’t bled before which that’s why I was worried (but yeah I was really constipated and it hurt) so I’m just observing at moment not had it since the last 2 occasions it happened

Good to hear they are on top of things but does sound like IBS and piles flare up. I never had them either until Summer 2018, I felt it happen and from there on it’s been off/on. I was so nervous.. she checked in office and said small piles but they get irritated with each movement, especially of constipated or hard. My fear was it being colon cancer. Still get very scared each time I see blood, but I take fiber and drink lots of water.. when I remember. I’m told bright red blood is consistent with piles. Have you had a colonoscopy?

I said the same fear was is it colon cancer? Or something like that. Me too I have never experienced piles or anything like that so I didn’t know how it felt but I had them constantly for months I used cream and then when I stopped using it, it would come back so the GP sent me for sigmoidoscopy and they said I had small piles. Then I saw two occasions after then small blood on stools so I went back to GP and she said it was the piles bleeding or a cut from being constipated , (I suffer sometimes with constipation that last time it was so bad it was stuck and felt like glass) I requested a colonoscopy and dr said I didn’t need it as it was ibs and cut/plies but she sent a stool sample to check for blood and that came back negative she said she would send me for one if that came up positive so now I’m just watching what I eat and observing stools to see if it happens again. I feel like these piles never truly go away though!

Did you go for a colonoscopy?

You and me seem to be on same path. I have had IBS for many years. But never experienced piles. So when it happened I was scared to death. She looked inside in office and said that was what it was but wants to do a colonoscopy to check the rest. That scares me to. I kind of would prefer a sigmoidoscopy instead. I am 48 so I guess I’m die anyways. If I use the cream and stay on track with fluid and fiber, I’m ok. But when I stop, things can flare up and it happens, bright red blood on surface, pain with and after a hard stool, glass feel. Bright red streaks on outside of it. When IBS flares then it looks like your pic. Glad you are ok and things are “normal”.

You said your stool came back negative, does it not detect the blood from IBS or is it just mucus but looks like blood I wonder?

That test It detects any blood from anything piles or anything - it can detect even small not visible amounts of blood apparently . I think the DR said is was a occult blood stool test. It can also detect Crohns and colitis. If there is blood present no matter what blood it would “show” but I don’t think it’s specific as such

I’m not sure if it was something like colon cancer for example would it be present all the time either in visible amounts or not visible - so I’m not entirely sure how it works and that’s why they use that test

The sigmoidoscopy wasn’t too bad at all just abit uncomfortable that’s how got diagnosed with piles (the doctor couldn’t see them looking) only with a sigmoidoscopy could they see my piles , but yeah mine have never truly gone away since May (5/6 months ago) yeah same happens to me once I get constipated or don’t have a good diet I get pains and piles seem to flare up ...ah does it so ibs flare up look like my picture? Is that how yours looked ? Yeah it was just small amounts of blood on the surface of stool and abit of mucous with some bloody mucous when I wiped , yes sounds like we have very similar symptoms

Yes we do, I’m glad I read upon this and thank you for posting even with the “graphic pic” that helped me a lot and made me a bit less fearful. Stay in touch, let me know how things are going. We def seem to be in same path.. glad it’s nothing more serious.. although all the same, still a pain in the butt!

I know you too keep in touch, (and yes had second thoughts with the picture haha but thought it could help others similar or anyone could relate that they had same thing / symptoms) and yeah they literally are awful to get rid of / for sure a pain in the butt , take care

Hi did you get a colonoscopy? What’s happening now? I seem to have similar problem.

Cho1987 profile image

Hi , I had a previously a sigmoidoscopy which was ok except I had piles they said , so that was causing the pain and perhaps some slight bleeding afterwards. But I’m also being looked into having endometriosis which could be having a effect too on bowels, it’s not happened since , so I’m just monitoring now, more than likely due to piles or fissures etc if only slight bleeding in the stool and not inside it

Also I have had a stool test to detect hidden blood which came back like under 19 score apparently that’s normal anything over 50 odd score is warrant for a colonoscopy so I would suggest to ask your GP for the blood stool test

Hi I have recently given birth and have blood in stool and when I wipe. The gp says its piles but will get checked to see... Are you getting bright red blood? Or still getting it?

Nicole_GCCA profile image

Hello Hidden ,

Congratulations on the birth! It sounds like you have not yet been physically examined, is that correct?

Bright blood does typically indicate hemorrhoids, or an anal fissure (tear). Please keep in mind this site does not provide medical advice, but an opportunity for members to share their experience and offer their opinions, but it should never replace seeking medical attention.

When you experience blood in the stool, the doctor will often perform a DRE (digital rectal exam) where they will both look and feel with their gloved fingers, to see if an any anal fissure (tears in the anus), hemorrhoids, or something else that could be causing the bleeding. Depending on the DRE results, any symptoms you are experiencing, family history, etc., your doctor will determine if further tests need to be performed.

There are many reasons for blood in the stool, some are very treatable with medication, diet change, and minor procedures, and of course, there are more serious reasons for blood in the stool as well. For that reason, we always advise patients to seek medical care when they have blood in the stool.

Before you speak to your doctor, be sure to have written down a list of all medications that you are currently taking, including over-the-counter medications and supplements. Often, patients with GI issues will also keep a food journal to track food and beverage intake, bowel movements, any pain or bleeding, etc. This could be useful information for your doctor. Additionally, it could show you a pattern (for instance, possibly being lactose intolerant, if you experience diarrhea after eating dairy).

Please keep us posted when you can,
