Polop been removed
Hi, Catherine. I am sorry no one replied and that I didn't log in sooner so that I could. Did you visit the Doctor yet?I want you to know the majority of polyps are harmless but over time some can develop into cancer so it is common when discovered to have it/them(if more than 1) biopsied and sent for testing. I am not going to lie and tell you that your Doctor calling you is nothing because he would not be calling if it was, but there are many things it could be aside from cancer. In fact, Inflammatory intestinal conditions, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are possible. I pray no matter what you learned you are at peace; mind, body, and soul. I had my first colonoscopy 4 years ago at the age of 37 after experiencing severe side pain that originally sent me to my Gyno but at the urging of my mother, I ended up at the Gastro. After listening to all my symptoms(aside from side pain) he sent me for a CT that revealed: "thickening of colon wall" which led to my first of many colonoscopies (aren't they fun, lol). During the procedure, he biopsied & removed multiple polyps which he sent for testing along with a biopsy of one, he could not remove. Imagine my shock when on the day of my scheduled follow-up appointment, after I called to reschedule, the Doctor himself called me while at work& told me what I didn't want to hear. To say I felt as if my world fell apart & the wind had been knocked out of me, is an understatement but I had an 11-year-old daughter at home so being strong for her and the fight that lies ahead was my only option. I had surgery 3 months later; a hemicolectomy(right side of colon removed) removing a large portion of my colon including the "affected" area followed by a reattachment (anastomosis). There were 12 nodes removed to check for lymphovascular invasion(NCI recommends a minimum of 12) and my wonderful surgeon removed my appendix as well because he didn't "like" the way it looked. Turns out the side pain was from the appendix which had nothing to do with cancer, rather a blood clot from my endometriosis adhered itself to the appendix. Endometriosis saved my life because without it I may have never experienced the side pain that led to my diagnosis, that was caught early. The pathology report came back w/ Dx of Stage 2a T3N0M0 moderately differentiated colon cancer at the age of 37, well below the recommended screening age of 50. The bright side, ( there was/is one) my surgeon removed it all laparoscopically, no lymph nodes were affected, no metastatic involvement(distant organs affected), clean margins(no cancer detected at reconnection site, and no perforation (tumor didn't penetrate the outermost layer of colon wall).I spent a total of 5 days in the hospital & whilst the recovery was a little rough the fact I no longer had the "monster" inside my body, more than made up for it. When I met with my Oncologist I requested I be given an Oncotype Dx test, relatively new at the time because it scores chance of reoccurrence based on sample of tumor. I was surprised to learn I was first patient with CC in my state to have the test as it was originally created and used for specific types of breast cancer. My score came back at 15% recurrence possibility so coupled w/ NCI guidelines of no adjuvant chemotherapy of stage 2 CC (unless high-risk features) and my 2nd opinion from a top cancer Doctor, I decided against chemo. I have been NED for 4 years and when I reach my 5th-year mark, my risk of getting cancer again is no higher than the general population. I am writing this book to you that started out as a simple reply because I want you to both be informed & let you know if this journey is one you must take, you CAN and WILL come out stronger on the other side. We as human beings possess two innate responses when faced with life-altering events that make us face our own mortality, fight or flight. I know you will #FightLikeAgirl so I am praying strength, wisdom, mercy, and COMPLETE healing for you; mind, body, and soul. Feel free contact me and PLEASE keep me updated.
