vit D and Calcium were suggested when I had my knee replacement

We would always advise having a discussion with your doctor about taking dietary supplements and complementary medicines. Please have a look at the link below which explains why it is important to be cautious.
My liver specialist advised the supplements of Milk Thistle, Vit E Vit C Vit D and B I also take curcumin and an acidophilus supplement. Apart from rattling when i jump.up.and down i have stayed pretty well for the past 10 years so will continue this until.told otherwise check it out with your consultant or specialist nurse.
I think an element of caution is required here. Someone should really seek advice from a medical professional who knows certain liver conditions before taking certain 'over the counter treatments.
Some multivitamins like vitamin 'C' are safe as the body takes what it needs and the rest is passed on to the kidneys for extraction. Other vitamins can be stored and later become harmful and toxic.
Milk Thistle can be dangerous for some people with cirrhosis, and could even end up doing more harm than good.
It is quite natural that when we are first told we have a damaged liver to want to try and make it better ourselves. So we go in search of remedies and quick fixes. (Those old enough may remember “Andrew's Liver Salts”)
Sadly, there are some unscrupulous people out there online, just waiting to take your money and exploit a person's concerns and worries. There are certain preparations being sold on places like Amazon that claim to cure fatty liver and reverse liver fibrosis and even cirrhosis.
Many of these companies hide behind forwarding addresses, so they are hard to track down, or even find out who is the CEO behind the company.
Back in April 2020, I began to take a look at some of these products and the companies behind them. I won’t name any of these companies for legal reasons, but one company was using their address as being “Chynoweth House”, Trevissome Park, Truro, TR4 8UN. There was no record of this company being registered at companies house. However, there were some other 1,130 different companies all using this same address. There is one company using this address whose address is Apt 23600 Chynoweth House, Trevissome Park, Truro, TR4 8UN. Not bad for a two-story farmhouse.
A lot of these so-called liver supplement drug companies seemed to use the same packaging. So I did some more digging. There is a particular company that all seems legit, but the CEO has qualifications in sales and marketing only. There is no mention of anyone being medically qualified in the use of drugs or herbal supplements' in this company.
The company address also appears to be a residential property in Uxbridge. According to companies house, this address was changed in Nov 2019. Before then it was given as being: 321 Birmingham Road, Sutton Coldfield, England, B72 1EH. This, in turn, turned out to be “Heathers Rest Home”. (this address has since once again changed hands).
I only mention this as a word of caution. There are many people out there that will try and sell you something you really don’t need.
Sadly there is no magical elixir for liver disease. No, secret formula that is only found in Tibetan yaks milk. No secret plant that only grows in Machu Picchu, Peru. There is no cure.
Homo sapiens have been around for 300,000 years and during that time, for the best part, livers have been working just fine, They have been repeatedly damaged and repaired. There was no need for supplements back then and no need for them now.
Just give your liver time to do its thing and repair itself.
Yes. If your liver is already suffering, it really doesn't want to be forced to work even harder processing suppliments which haven't been prescribed by your specialists. Especially milk thistle.
If it helps my consultant and GP have prescribed Thiamine and B complex (this is standard for people with liver disease) and are happy that I also take Vit D as it is a supplement recommended for most people in the Northern Hemisphere where we get so little sun!
I had a consultation with my gastroenterologist last week and specifically asked about taking milk thistle, which I have taken for about six years, ever since I was diagnosed with PBC. I also have cirrhosis. He said it was ok to take it. Then again, I'm starting to not entirely trust everything he says. So I stopped taking it after reading that milk thistle isn't recommended for people with cirrhosis.
