Waiting to do next set of liver enzyme tests, obsessing about everything!

New to this group and want to thank all of you who contribute your stories, it’s been eye opening to say the least. I will do my next round of liver enzyme tests next week, which will be 3.5 weeks since the first tests. I will be traveling for 1 month shortly thereafter, that is why it wasn’t scheduled for 4-6 weeks after initial tests.

My tests showed elevated ggt 468 and ast 125, the rest was normal. I attribute these scary high levels to my daily wine habit and also to taking a lot of meds. I have a rare skin condition that requires antihistamines and steroids, I was taking birth control but stopped, I take thyroid meds, I take anxiety meds and sleep meds. I believe the culprit is wine but also the meds have a role in this.

I am 48, fit, 49 kilos and feel generally good. I haven’t had red meat for 33 years, no eggs, I stay away from processed foods, make real and healthy food at home every day, almost never eat at restaurants, no fried foods, no refined sweets, etc. My cholesterol levels are fantastic, my test results couldn’t have been better except for the liver enzymes.

I stopped all alcohol (which was only wine), I have been eating only liver beneficial foods these weeks, 80% plant based and animal protein coming from greek yogurt and low fat cottage cheese and the occasional chicken breast. I started drinking decaf coffee, green tea with lemon, chia seeds, berries, kale juice, beet/orange carrot juice, cranberry juice, tons of spinach and rocket, walnuts, chickpeas, bananas, grapefruit, broccoli, carrots, beets etc. No pasta, rice, bread or potatoes. I have felt extra good these weeks, tons of energy. I had zero alcohol withdrawals. Surprising since I averaged up to a bottle of wine per day. I take a multivitamin every 2-3 days and milk thistle and turmeric capsules as well.

I believe my diet and zero alcohol *should* bring the levels down (if wine was the culprit). However, I am now obsessing about other things. I usually have my hair colored every 3 weeks and nails done weekly. I will wait to do these things after my blood test. I also was supposed to get a flu vaccination which I have postponed until after the tests. I live in Brazil and our flu season is about to begin. Don’t know if these things actually affect liver enzymes but I am consumed by fear. Fear of things such as pesticides in foods that I can’t control! The organic food selection in Brazil is quite limited.

Anyone relate? I am driving myself nuts!

No sorry I can't relate to it. However alot of the meds you are taking may and alcohol will definately make a difference to the test results.

Hair colouring, nail products and pesticides though ? Really? But to put your mind at rest why not phone the hospital and ask your haematology department if any or all these things will affect your blood results.

Hi airlegs,

You seem to be doing all the things you can that could help.

The only thing I can think of is, and it is easy to say and hard to do, is wait and see what your next tests show and what your doctor says.

Best wishes,

Mary
