Enzymes

Since my transplant I have had diabetes, on a recent blood test a high enzyme reading was detected (600+). I understand it should be around 100. The hospital are aware so that should soon be sorted, I also have a low risk skin cancer the good news there is it has not spread..Take care all, and stay positive

Hiya Brummi, good news about the cancer. Nothing is straight forward after transplant is it. I too have diabetes post transplant, which has been the most annoying thing I've had to deal with ! Every other problem seems to be manageable. Not sure what you mean by enzyme, which one was it ? Did you have a Hba1c test done ? Do you see a diabetic specialist/ nurse ?

Are you still on steroids? Sorry so many questions! Really glad you're doing ok, it's just amazing.

Not a problem about the questions, this morning I went to have some stitches out and just got told about the enzymes. You are certainly right about problems, I not had steroids for over 12 months now. It seems to be due to blocked bile ducts. Maybe you have heard about the surgeon who branded his initials on livers as he put them in, well I am one of the ones who had my liver done. Could be worse he could have wrote I love you or something silly like that...

Ha ha - what on earth was he thinking???? glad you kept your humour. Oh so the enzyme elevation is liver ? Only reason I was asking about hba1c was because steroids as well as tacrolimus can increase blood glucose ( I'm still on steroids and always will be). However I did start with the dreaded pbc type itch a few months ago ( was terrified as you can imagine) and my gamma gt enzyme was elevated), this went on for a few months and my wonderful consultant at Newcastle has put me on Urso , he doesn't think pbc active in my new liver but 6 weeks after starting the drug, enzymes back to normal and itch no worse. So although he's treating me as a precaution and preventative, it's calmed everything down. When do you go back to hospital ?

I am due back at the clinic on the 15th of Jan. I itch again but there are a few reasons for this, a part of the liver may have been starved of blood during the transplant or the liver was damaged as it was put in. Dispute this and all the other problems I have had I am happy to be alive. The consultants are fairly sure the disease has not returned. Even during my darkest days I kept and still have a sense of humour.

Me too, life is good albeit different than before. I just think with autoimmune diseases like ours, there are going to be fluctuations . I think that if I get up in a morning and feel ok ( ish) then all is well.

Good luck on 15 th and please let us know how you get on.

No problem, I am always ready to chat. Just think we actually belong to a unique club. Just one more smile, when I got told that I have pbc I also got told it was a disease mainly for ladies, as soon as I got home I dug out my birth certificate just to check if I was male or female.... Take care I enjoyed our little chat..

You too make me laugh. I belong to pbc club. I managed 20yrs of it until I had my transplant in January. My liver tests were high in August so steroids were increased.. Seems it is hard to cancel your membership to our club. Ps...people thought I wrapped myself in black plastic..PBC not PVC!

Best wishes to you Gill x

Me too post transplant diabetic due to bloody pred. On a low carb diet to keep insulin low. Seems to be working as I did not take pred for one day and blood sugers were really low so fingers crossed for the future. Hopefully when ive got rid of this bloody hep c with this new drug coming out I can stop the pred and not be diabetic any more fingers crossed. Then if they can lower the Siriolimus my cholesterol will come down and I can stop the statins. Ha ha ha got to keep hoping and dreaming, good luck for the new year may all your wishes come true. X
