Deranged Liver Enzymes

I have been having blood tests repeated every 2 months due to raised levels once again they have came back raised and the GP has asked to have the repeated again on Tuesday.

I'm becoming more concerned as the GP doesn't seem to be referring this to anyone and I have tried to make an appointment but the first one I can get is the 29th of this month.

I have been having pain both on my right side under my rib sometimes I feel it as if it is gong through to my back. I as have been experiencing pain in my Left side under my ribs. I have nausea on an off and feel fatigued. Is there a cancer pathway or protocol that patients can demand to be seen I am thinking of booking an MRI of my gall bladder ducts and pancreas the scanning centre say Liver MRI requires contrast so I need a referral for that.

Hi, if your bloods have been out for a while I would have thought you would have had a scan by now. Ring Drs and say you would like to have one.

Exactly the same happened to me. I had to keep pushing my GP. Gps follow NICE guidance. It maybe worth having a look.

Referrals for scans under the NHS are either urgent or routine. I would push for a scan.

Hope you get it sorted soon

I hope Im not being intrusive but can I ask whether it was an MRI or CT you had ? My GP is just repeating the bloods I feel I need some ammunition correct protocol to offer to make my voice heard

Don't mind at all.Ask awayBasically i had stomach pains since last November.Blood tests ok then they referred me for an ultrasound. That found fatty liver by accident. It scared me into changing my diet.Liver enzymes went 3x out of range.Came on this forum and got advice and insisted my GP ordered a full liver panel including antibodies. My enzymes slowly started to come down. Was in alot of pain.111 sent me to A&E.My WBC where high. They thought my appendix was going to burst.Saw a surgeon and they ordered a CT scan of abdo pelvis with contrast for the next day.

I have found my GP not very good with liver stuff.I now just tell them what bloods i need and they generally do them.Ive been waiting months for a fibroscan as the forms where sat on someones desk for 3 months.I got PALS involved at the hospital and within a few days i got the apponintment through.

You do need to push, refer the GP to NICE guidance for raised liver enzymes.Hope this helps

Any questions at all please ask

Have your GP schedule an Ultrasound with focus on the liver and gallbladder to start. Sometimes gallstones can cause elevated enzymes, are you on any meds? Medications can make liver enzymes shot up especially the ALT and ALP once you get to a certain point where your liver decides it’s not going to process the meds the same.

Only thyroid medication

I recommend you give the British Liver Trust helpline a ring and the nurses mau well be able to provide the clinical guideline information you need to push for the appropriate level of assessment. Certainly having a pattern of elevated bloods should be flagging a need for further investigation to asceryain what is going on.

I would request a blood test to check for the autoimmune markers, especially AMA.

Hi that was taken last Thursday so waiting on the result of that

The normal first scan seems to be an abdominal ultrasound. If anything is suspicious they usually refer for Fibroscan. MRE or biopsy are the next level scans after that. I’d push for an abdominal ultrasound as a first point.

Don’t leave it. I had ultra sounds with same symptoms. Nothing came up. Actually commented on how healthy my liver looked. Eventually got an MRI. Still found nothing. Then liver biopsy. Found to have NASH. They have no idea why I have it. I am not over weight and have no other markers. Do not delay, sort it today. I was diagnosed 15 years ago. My LFT’s are constantly raised. I am lucky, I have no symptoms. I’ve never drunk alcohol etc. I just manage food better and exercise a bit.

Don’t read this if you don’t like pain….. have a liver biopsy as a last resort. They are not fun.

Had a call from the GP surgery despite my LFT's still being out of range apparently in his opinion I am stable and stated I have been referred to Gastro which was over 5 months ago called British Liver trust who were extremely helpful. I called the Practise Manager yesterday to express my concerns now waiting on results of AMA blood test and I will take it from there. Had privately an MRI of abdomen liver and MRCP gall bladder pancreas yesterday so results next week. I am positive for ANA antibodies

Are you aware that hypo patients on Levo often have raised liver enzymes. My liver levels have been high for 20 years and despite every test and scan including a biopsy no cause has been found so my Gastro consultant has deemed it now normal for me and likely meds/Levo related.

Katrina999666 in reply tobantam12

Hi yes although I had raised enzymes few times when not on any medication for Hypo they commented then that I was a candidate for PBC as I have Sjogrens and Hashimotos they were going to do a biopsy then but the levels returned to normal over a course of 6 weeks

My levels go up and down, frustrating not knowing if anything is going on.
