Arm Cast

Hi Everyone

Firstly, apologies for being absent from here for a few months. Work has been crazy busy (I work in the Exams department of a very large college group), as you can imagine with all the A-Levels, GCSEs etc anyway, I have now managed to complete my 10K a few times, well before my race in October.

Last week, I climbed Snowdon and at the bottom (before going up or down), I fell and (I didn't realise at the time) have broken my wrist. The climb up and down was very long (about 12.5K) and hard, so I had always planned not to run again for a few days. However, those few days have now turned into a week. I missed my parkrun and Thursday and Tuesday (tomorrow) run due to my arm being in a plaster cast. I have a fracture clinic appointment on Wednesday this week, so my two short questions are :

1) - I am terrified of losing all my fitness by not running (or swimming) ??

2) - Can I run with an arm cast on ??

I have power walked to work and home again today (about 2 miles each way, in 30mins)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and help 👍😀

Arghh  adnewg73 so sorry you’re injured!! You don’t have to apologise for being absent-no one is taking a register! It’s always nice to see you when you’re around.

I fell last year and sprained both wrists and elbows without needing a cast. Getting into a sports bra to be able to run was by far the worst bit! The advice I was given was to try and run on sensible terrain to minimise my risk of falling again, but basically as soon as I felt up to it, running was ok. I don’t know what the official advice for running with a cast is though-asking at fracture clinic is probably your best bet. Another option could be to use a bike at a gym-mine has some that you can use without putting any pressure on your wrists.

Totally get the frustration and the desire not to lose fitness. As a bit of encouragement. I lost a lot less than I thought and it all came back quicker than I expected. Hopefully it’ll be the same for you when you’re ready! Sending good wishes your way ❤️‍🩹
