Coming back again

Having started the nrc 10k plan in January all was going swimmingly until a fortnight ago I was struck down with some sort of cold/flu. Four days in bed and a cough to take the roof off the house followed. I'm still tired but this morning I thought I'd take a gentle tiny step back into the running world. I chose the come back run with coach Bennett, just fifteen minutes, and I thought I would walk some bits. The aim was to finish feeling good.

The sun was shining and I just started by walking slowly up the first part of the lane, listening to the birds and enjoying being outside again. I liked coach Bennett's focus on the importance of finishing the run feeling good. After a couple of minutes I began to run very slowly. It was so good to be out, to see the sun on the hills and the snowdrops glowing under the hedges. I decided the whole aim of today was just to remind myself that I love running and to be really kind to myself.

All went well. I didn’t go very far and I didn't go very fast but i was out there. It's a long way from 5k, never mind 10k, but it's a start!

Sounds wonderful, and just what you needed. It can take ages to recover from these winter bugs , but it seems you took exactly the right approach to get a successful run under your belt 👍

I would admit that I've felt so rough over the last couple of weeks that I was quite intimidated by the idea of running again! I found coach Bennett's focus on the idea that the aim of this run was to finish it feeling that you would like to run again really really helpful. Very clever coaching!

Thanks sue! It's a pain isn't it when illness or whatever sets you back. I hope things are going well for you now and you are back on track. X

It really is a pain, my middle ears have been so blocked that I've been bumbling around at home holding walls, but beginning to feel better and I have another referral to ENT to see if they can fix them for good. Not being able to hear what people are saying is the worst. But I managed to finally finish painting my kitchen yesterday so I must be on the mend 😁 next thing I do will be a run. X

I lost a lot of hearing before having my ears shringed. It was dreadful. I felt very isolated and because it was such hard work to communicate Ian and I lost all the casual bits of chat and only spoke about big, practical things. Completely changed my appreciation of the power of hearing! Really hope they can fix it for you.

Welcome back! Sounds just the right thing!

(Did you realise there are also a few walking audio-coached sessions on NRC?)

It is wonderful to get back out there after a bout of illness...and when we're just thrilled to be well enough to run and don't care how far or how fast it makes us fully appreciate the joy of running 😀

Glad you enjoyed it and are on your way back to full health 😊
