Finally back out there properly

After several sessions on the IC I started back seriously running again a few weeks ago. Some days I can manage 5k easily - some days I can barely do 2k...it depends on whether I have slept and how my chest is feeling.

But the last couple of weeks things have felt a bit better and I thought I’d try to get up to 10k again. I used to religiously run for the whole distance as I thought if I stopped and walked that was it. But when I realised other people take a minutes walk now and then and carry on I thought maybe if I need to I will.

I tried to do Jujus plan again but struggled with the longer distances to start with so I am currently following the nhs Bridge to 10k app. Week 1 is 4 times 10 minute runs with 1 minute walk between ( so 43 mins total plus warm up and cool down ) and I have managed this twice now even in this windy weather so I am going to carry on with the 3rd run on Friday and then next week is 3 times 15 minute runs with 1 minute walk between.

Today was a killer though...against the wind on the first half and then I was looking forward to having it behind me on way home and the wind dropped when I turned and the sun came out. I’d dressed for the Arctic Circle too so I was sweltering then. 🤣

As I used to run for nearly 1 and 1/2 hours without walking at all to do a 10k I know I CAN do this. I just get impatient that I’m not back to where I was before I fractured and sprained my ankle last June.

Still slowly improving is better than still on the IC so onward and upward .... even against the wind🌬💨

You will get there - listen to your body and take your time. I have also had injuries that have taken time and determination to get back from. It usually all comes together in the end! Good luck!

The wind makes a huge difference to our ability to run so don’t worry too much. Well done for getting out again after injury. You will reach 10k again - just keep getting out there. 🏃‍♀️👏👏

Well done on completing your second W1 run. I've just managed to get back to 10k after an illness break and it takes a while. And yes the wind was a killer today! 😀

I have really rosy cheeks though now so I think I’d better slap some moisturiser on. The wind played havoc with my skin today. 🤣

I think my skin is past that! 😀

Well done it was hard in the wind today 👍🏻 it’s great when you read this forum and realise that it’s ok to not run like a race horse and that it is actually ok to take a walking break every now and then if you want to 👍🏻😃 you will get get back to 10k soon!

It’s nice to see you off the IC and back at it again. It may take a bit of time but you’ll get there. Don’t rush it, enjoy the journey of building back up again.

Yeah I don’t know why I’m so competitive even against myself. I look at past runs and think “ I did it then, why can’t I now.”

Then my calm sensible daughter says “Mum you’ve had injuries, and illnesses and you are 65!!! Don’t stress about it. You’re not training for the Olympics..you’re running because you enjoy it( and it’s brought your BP down ... and maybe one day your weight too) there’s no law says you must run THIS far in THAT time “. And I do enjoy it, especially when the weather is nice enough to look about and see where I am.

I know what you mean! I do the same thing, getting frustrated with not running any faster but I haven't been doing any intervals and have spent the last few months running on ice and snow in really cold weather. It is good to remind ourselves why we run and enjoy the runs without any pressure. After my 6 week hiatus I just ran short distances to get my body used it it without rebelling and am now following a plan again to get back on track for a HM and I didn't have a fracture. Slow and steady will get you where you want to be with time.
